Shakespeare and Prayer by Mary Augusta Wadsworth, published by W. M. Welch and Company, Chicago, 1901. Color photographs of pages from original leather-bound volume. Original page size 5 3/4" x 8 1/4".The following description is from "The Standard," Vol. 50, January 24, 1903:"Shakespeare and Prayer." By Mary A. Wadsworth. Chicago: W.M. Welch & Co.The author of this beautiful little book is a well known lecturer on Shakespeare and other literary topics, whose familiarity with the works of the great dramatist has been recognized by some of the leading Shakespeare scholars in the country. She has collected the numerous references to prayer in the plays - more numerous than any casual reader would suppose - and has arranged them in systematic order with reference to the ideas of prayer which they illustrate. Her commentary is discriminating and helpful. Those who have supposed that Shakespeare is a non-religious poet, whose references to religion and the Bible are few and doubtful, will be greatly enlightened by this glimpse of the true wealth of his many-sided nature. Miss Wadsworth's publishers have given the essay a form worthy of its content. It is printed with wide margins on fine paper, with special marginal designs and many illustrations from the plays, and bound in several styles, all attractive. An appropriate gift-book.
