This magazine was entirely created and produced by the students of the 2009-10
Master of Graphic Design at the Florence Institute of Design International.
Seven young designers from four different continents showcase their visual
interpretations of various aspects of their Italian experience. The result reflects one
year of work and experimentation with different media and disciplines, from art
history and illustration to photography and typography, filtered through the students’
varied backgrounds, interests and aesthetic sensibilities.
It’s been a very full and challenging year, with the school’s intensive courses and
activities on one side, and on the other a fascinating city with its rich historical
heritage and lively contemporary scene. And there was so much to explore and be
inspired by: the food, the language, the new friendships, the shopping, the Italian
culture, lifestyle and traditions, the local people, the night life, the surroundings...
And now, it’s time to move on and travel back home with a suitcase full of memories,
and new knowledge and skills waiting to be put to good use. I wish a great new
beginning and the best of luck to everyone!

has a lower butterfat content,
regularly gelato contains
4-8% versus 14% for ice
cream. Gelato has lower
sugar content averaging from
16-22% versus 21% for
ice cream, so now we know
gelato is somewhat healthier
than ice cream.
In every street of Florence
you will find a gelateria, but
most of them are the typical
artificial ones that all the
tourists get. I will recommend
you my favorite ones that are
NATURAL and HOMEMADE.
The history of gelato dates
back to frozen desserts served
in ancient Rome and Egypt
made from ice and snow
brought down from mountain
tops and preserved below
ground. Later, gelato appeared
during banquets at the Medici
court in Florence.
I think one of the things that I
have enjoyed the most in Italy
are the gelatos. I’m a very big
fan of ice cream; chocolate
and cookies n’cream are
my favorite flavors, here in
Florence I always get Nocciola
and Bacio. Unlike the typical
american ice cream the gelato

use high quality materials. It
feels so good when you go
out in the streets walking with
your brand new leather shoes!
It just makes you feel special.
Believe me, it’s totally worth
spending the money, plus they
last long, so go ahead and
give yourself a little treat. If you
are in Italy you MUST buy a
pair of shoes, its not too much
to ask, at least I think so.
It’s not an urban legend,
many people say Italian
shoes are the best, and it’s
true. They have high quality
craftsmanship and great style.
Italian designers are known for
their unique designs all over
the world, and this is because
they understand the anatomy
of feet as well as fashion.
When you purchase genuine
Italian shoes you are making
the right decision because

This graphic was created as a representation of my ex-
periences here in Florence over the past year of study.
The bright colors are a visual infusion of the many sounds
as well as emotions of this city and the people who
live here. Though Florence strives to retain its histori-
cal inheritance, do not let yourself be lulled into a false
sence of stillness, for this small city is always changing.

by the city of Florence,
where the old meets
the new.
Walking through some
of the narrow Florentine
streets it seems like
time has stopped in the
XV century, every corner
is history, the walls still
carry the echoes of
Savonarola’s preaching.
Just two blocks away
you might find yourself
back in the year 2010,
surrounded by stores
of high-end fashion
designers like Gucci
and louis Vuitton.
That specific contrast
is what I focused on in
my project.

Shadow is fascinating.

our assignment was to present
a series of photographs, shot in
a simple studio set-up.
The topic I chose was protrait
photography with a dramatic
light effect from the side.

The GoThIc TheATre
This photoshoot was one of the final projects in university in a simple 2 light studio set-up. My classmates were the models and we borrowed props. I created some of the designs for the faces, while others were done by the models themselves.

TRAVEL ITALIAI was inspired by the golden age of tourist posters in Italy from 1920 to the1950s. I wanted to capture the essence of their style in a modern graphic illustration of Florence.

TUSCAN TASTy
Wine - VinoThe heart of this region is in its vineyards, which produce the great wines of Tuscany. chianti is the best red, strong, and bold wine I know and a must try.
Vegetables - VerdureFresh vegetables can be found from quaint grocers down small alleyways on almost every corner. even though they are not perfect looking, the taste is so fresh and delicious.
olive oil - olio d’olivaTuscan rolling hills of olive groves yield the finest extra virgin olive oil. Which is best served with a pinch of salt, pepper, garlic, and a slice of Tuscan bread.
PastaPasta can be dry or “all’uovo”, made with eggs, which is best served with a traditional tomato sauce. Don’t forget the Parmesan cheese on top!
bread - PaneThe famous Tuscan bread has no salt to help enhance the flavor of the tasty cusine. The best is well-baked with a crisp crust and light and airy inside.
