Brethren,
Last week a Ribault degree team composed of Past Masters put on
a MM degree in excellent form. I would like to congratulate our
newest Master Masons and welcome them to our fraternity as well
as a new and exciting way of life.
The first meeting of our Ribault Public Relations Committee has
been conducted and I am excited to see the framework for our
outreach material start to become reality.
I have reached out to Wreaths Across America Jacksonville to
obtain further information about their organization and to schedule
a visit from them to come to Ribault to discuss their organization
and to see how we can help. I am also reviewing lodge meeting
schedules so we can make enough lodge visits where we can
acquire all of the travelling tools in our district at the same time.
We sure have lots going on and I am enjoying the start of 2018.

Happiness - Reflections on the wisdom and teachings of Brother George Washington: EA Nov. 4, 1752, FC Mar. 3, 1753, and raised to MM Aug. 4, 1753
Happiness is a common word – but so important it is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence of 1776: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
In Washington’s day, “happiness” did not just mean being jovial, full of mirth, or joyful. Rather it referred to the cause of such feelings. Happiness occurred when a person’s desires were satisfied, and more especially when one was free to work and live according to one’s duty and God-given talents.
Washington understood that the vision of Freemasonry was essentially to be a self-improvement organization. To improve good men morally, intellectually and spiritually through rituals and symbols. Freemasonry was, is, and must be “a beautiful system or morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.” Following its precepts, tenets and obligations is a path towards happiness.
William Preston (1742-1818) whose Illustrations of Masonry constitutes most of the American Masonic lectures, wrote in 1796: “By the proper use of talents, the wisdom of precepts, and the force of example, the mind is improved and the brethren are united in social harmony; while the happiness, which originates in the Lodge, disperses its influence to the wide circle of the world.”
This comment is not a definition of Freemasonry, but it does explain how men ought to become Freemasons, and it may well be the best explanation of Freemasonry’s function.
