This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at shsresearch@umsystem.edu. INTRODUCTION The papers are from a St. Louis journalist and organizer of the 1904 World’s Fair. First section includes items from Reeve’s early journalistic career. The bulk of the papers in the second section concern the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, related materials, and photographs. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Grace Robinson on 21 October 1970 (Accession No. 3862). An addition was made on 6 November 1984 by Grace Robinson through Kathryn Murdock (Accession No. 4597). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Charles Reeves was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on January 6, 1868. After high school, he worked as a journalist for the local papers until 1892, when he moved to St. Louis to become night city editor of the St. Louis Globe Democrat. His journalism career includes the 1895 appointment as political editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and his coverage of the 1896 presidential campaign and election and speaking tours of William Jennings Bryan. Following the 1896 election, Reeves retired from newspaper work and became deputy assessor of St. Louis. In 1901, he was appointed to head a joint committee to promote Missouri’s participation in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition to be held in St. Louis in 1904. His title was Chief, Department of Domestic Exploitation.
Having obtained a law degree from Benton College of Law in St. Louis in 1902, Reeves opened a law practice following the Exposition. In 1917-1918, he returned to newspaper work as managing editor of the Omaha Bee and contributor to the New York World Telegram and Sun. He died in New York in November of 1920. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Charles Reeves Papers are divided into the following three series: Early Career; Louisiana Purchase Exposition; and Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Photographs. The first series includes newspaper clippings related to Reeves’ early journalistic career. The second series pertains to the Exposition and contains clippings, invitation, reports, scrapbooks, information on art and architecture. The third series includes photographs of people, exhibits, art and architecture of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. Materials are arranged chronologically within each group.
