WhatdoesreconciliationlooklikeinOntario?ReconciliationbetweenIndigenousandnon‐IndigenouspeoplesinCanadaisnotjustaboutthelegacyofresidentialschools.Itisamulti‐facetedprocessthatrestoreslands,economicself‐sufficiency,andpoliticaljurisdictiontoFirstNations,anddevelopsrespectfulandjustrelationshipsbetweenFirstNationsandCanada.

AlthoughahistoryofcolonizationhasdeeplyimpactedallIndigenouspeoplesacrossCanada,anddecolonizationrequiressignificantchangeatthefederallevel,theprocessofreconciliationisalsouniquetoeachregion.Thisisbecauseofculturalandhistoricaldifferencesamongthemorethan630FirstNationsinCanada,varyingsettlerpopulations,differentecosystemsandeconomies.

Thejurisdictionalseparationofprovincialandfederalpowersmeansthattherearedifferentlegalregimesineachprovince.Thissymposiumaskedthequestions:WhatdoesreconciliationlooklikeinOntarioandwhatconcretewayscanitberealized?

TheUniversityofTorontoandtheNationalCentreforFirstNationsGovernanceinvitedrepresentativesfromOntarioFirstNations,thefederalandOntariogovernments,businessandindustry,andtheuniversityforanopen‐endedandintergenerationalexplorationofthesequestionsatatwo‐daysymposiuminFebruary2011.

THEEVENTFirstNationsleaders,youthandcitizensgatheredwithnon‐Aboriginalbusinesspeople,civilservants,lawyers,academics,andstudentsinanappropriatevenue:theNativeCanadianCentreofToronto.Over140participantscametogethertofindanswerstothecriticalneedforIndigenousandnon‐Indigenouspeoplestomoveforwardonthequestionofreconciliation.

DOUGLASSANDERSONDouglasSandersonisfromtheOpaskwayakCreeNation.HeearnedhisLL.MatColumbiaUniversitywherehewasaFulbrightscholar.From2004‐2007hewasaSeniorAdvisortotheGovernmentofOntario,firstintheOfficeoftheMinisterResponsibleforAboriginalAffairs,andlater,totheAttorneyGeneral.From2007to2009,hewasaVisitingResearchFellowattheUniversityofTorontoFacultyofLaw,whereheisnowanAssistantProfessor.
