RAMPAL Coal-fire Power Plant and the destruction of SUNDARBANS A PRESENTION by :-Md. NAYON HOSSAIN, Student,

department of environmental sciences , JAHANGIRNAGAR university

The Flooded forest …the SUNDARBANS… LET,s discover more……1.World largest mangrove forest2.Unesco declared as world heritage site3.Total area of SUNDARBANS Bangladesh is 5,771 sq.km4.Home of Royal BANGEL tiger, 5.The rainfall and humidity are both high.it supports a spectacular wildlife both in terms of number and variety

Bangladesh

Natural beauty of SUNDARBANSHome of 49 species of mammals

315 Species of birds

The SUNDARBANS are home to mammals, birds reptiles ,fish , an insect population including honey -bees

How The RAMPAL Coal Power Plant will Destroy The SUNDARBANS………….

Location of RAMPAL coal power plant….very near to SUNDARBANS…

Location of thermal power stations are avoided within 25 km of the outer periphery of the following…

1.metropolitan cities

2.National park and wildlife sanctuaries

3.Ecologically Sensative areas like tropical

forest biosphere reserve ,important lake and coastal areas rich coral formation

But in Bangladesh , it is being allowed to set up a large coal based thermal power plant at a distance of 14 km.

At a glance RAMPAL power plant……

Impact area….

Impacts during pre-construction and construction time…

Rice production is 62,353 tons in the entire area and 1285 in location area

All will destroy…..

Some scattered mangrove would be removed for jetty construction

.During construction phase ,solid waste and wastes water discharge to the river would cause water pollution .Destroy the habitat of

birds ,eagle . Creating noise pollution .EIA report concerns that ,”if the navigational ,spillages ,noise , speed ,lighting ,waste disposal rules are not properly maintained, it may

impact the ecosystem of royal BENGAL tiger, deer ,

crocodiles , dolphins ,mangrove etc.

Impacts during operation stage……

The coal power plant will be operational for at least 25 years

Impacts of Toxic sulfur and Nitrogen Gases

Other harmful products…..

Destroy the food web of SUNDARBANS…..

Impact of coal transportation through SUDARBANS

At a glance…..

1.Water column may be polluted

2.ship to ship transfer activites at AKARM point will generat noise thus creat distrubnce to the wildlife of SUNDARBANS

3.The coal carrying vessels ,plying along to PASSURE river ,will generate wave which will cause shore erosion

Coal transportation route………….

Other PROBLEM ………

1.The power plant will generate 7 lakh tonnes of sky ash 2 lakh Tonnes of bottom ash per year

2.The ashes contain sulfur carbon dioxide, arsenic, mercury, lead, chromium ,

Prof Dr. M A SATTAR in his study showed that………

Ground water of POSSUR would be polluted by amount of waste produced due to burning of the coal and toxic substance can contaminate drinking water

The project…..

The distance…….

So we should raise our voice to save SUDARBANS …….

Stop RAMPAL…….

Save SUNDARBANS ……

Raise your voice

Our slogan……….

What we want……….

Thanks toall
