LOCATION OF RAMPAL POWER STATION • The Rampal Power station is located in Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat district in Khulna Bangladesh. It will be the biggest power station in our country.
PROJECT DETAILS• Sponsor: Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company
Pvt. Ltd. (BIFPCL) • Parent company: Bangladesh Power Development Board,
NTPC • Location: Khulna, Bangladesh • Capacity: 1320 MW (2 x 660 MW) • Type: Ultra-Supercritical • Projected in service: 2018
AGREEMENT• In August 2010, this project was signed between Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and India's state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) • On January 29, 2012, the Bangladesh Power
Development Board signed an agreement with NTPC to build the plant. • Agreed to implement the project by 2016. • The BPDB and the NTPC agreed to implement the
project on a 50:50 equity basis. • The NTPC will set up and operate the plant
FINANCING
•Loans are expected to fund up to 70% of the US$1.5 billion project. • India and Bangladesh will fund the remaining 30% equally (15% each)
ENVIRONMENT ISSUE • It has been alleged that the Rampal station is against The Ramsar
Convention because the plant is to be built in a forest and sensitive wetlands area.
• Different types of wastes like the residue of the coal, ballast water, bilge water, oil etc produced from the Ships will be discharged to the river system and pollute the environment.
• Water column may be polluted due to oil spillage, coal spillage and other malpractice like
• waste discharge, discharge of ballast and bilge water etc
• Ship-to-ship transfer activities, shipping and barging activities at Akram point will generate noise create disturbance to the wildlife of the Sundarbans. • Ballast water, oil spillage and coal dropping might
affect pneumatological of Mangrove plants
RESOLVE • Rampal power plant should be stopped due to the dangerous ecological effect of it. • Govt. should find out another alternative way & save Sundarbans by stopping this project
