1.1the Role of Machinery Design

• Design of machine elements is an integral part of the larger and more general field of machinery design.

• Design of machine elements is the design of mechanical components and devices.

• Design of Machine Elements consists of the capacity calculation and structure design.

The course Machinery Design is a compulsory course for students who major in mechanical engineering; It is an important technological basic course in mechanical engineering education ; It is not only theoretical but also practical.

1.2Machinery and Components

The mechanical components are the fundamental elements of machinery.

• Universal Components: bolts, gears, belts, chains, bearings, etc.

• Special Components: turbine blades, crankshaft, aircraft propeller

1.4Contents and Tasks of the Course

Pins• Transmission: Power Screws, Belt Drives, Ch

ain Drives, Gear Drives,Worm Gearing• Shaft System: Sliding Bearings, Rolling-Cont

Tasks

• Introduce the students to the principles of mechanical design.

• Provide the students with the experience in the design of universal components.

• Build the student’s English abilities to read ,think and express in specialized fields.

Links of the Course

1、 Twice design projects:• Design of a screw jack• Design of a shaft system

2、 Twice experiments:• Experiment of belt drive• Experiment of hydrodynamic lubrication

3、 Course design (separately):• Design of a speed reducer

Learning Method

• Relate theory and practice;

• Complete the homework and design project by yourself;

• Consult teacher at anytime if you have question;

• Emphasis on the understanding of the design principles but not the formulas.
