By Nkechi Chukwumah

LORD OF WAR INFORMATION:

• Lord of War is a thriller film, and it meets the conventions by gripping us from the very beginning.

• The opening sequence shocks us, and that makes us want to find out more about the film.

• Thrillers aim to shock and grab your attention from the

beginning. This is what this opening sequence does.

STILLS

The title/font is in sans serif. It looks like an old typewriter, which could suggest the film is set in the olden days.

This is an extreme close up shot.

This is high angle shot

This is a close-up shot telling us where the bullet is aiming. This aims to shock us, and also make us feel a sense of disgust.

Special Effects: The bullet noises, slow motion, and the fact every bullet was magnified.

These are POV shots, showing life from the sight of the bullet.

Sound: The sound is diagetic meaning only the audience can hear the music playing, and not the characters in the scene.

The transitions are smooth, as they flow from scene to scene. This may symbolise that bullets are transported with ease, and the process is very straightforward.

TARGET AUDIENCE

• The target audience for this film would mostly be for men. This is because the film is about war, and machinery, and this is a topic mostly enjoyed by men.

Analysing Opening Sequences

Tiara Morris - purple

The Title amongst a pure blue background (chemical tone)

Nail clipping falling to the ground (sounds).

Hair trimmings falling to the ground (sounds).

The man cleaning/grooming his skin.

Font/ Titles: the font that were used in this production of the opening sequence were small and blurry this created suspense and was very unrealistic , the use of the small writing was if you could not see the object and would need a magnifying glass to see it which enhances the idea of a science fiction movie.

Another point is that as this is a sci-fi movie the words GATTACA- make up our DNA strand, using four single letters – ACTG. This is a connotation of the sci fi drama and also creates realism.

Camera shots: a lot of long shots were used in this piece to illustrate different ideas being thought of and them coming into action. There were was one element of sallow focus shot (where the man was coming his hair) this suggests he is not yet present to us (the audience) and is sort of a mystery.

Camera Movement: the camera used a lot of movement when illustrating the title, it would zoom out of the word which made it dramatic.

Sound (diagetic) :– the emphasis on the sounds of the man shaving and grooming his self, creates a sense of realism , it makes the audience feel as if they are there and creates a vivid image of what he may be doing. (non-diagetic)- the non diagetic sound we can here are when there are things (i.e.. Nail clippings and hair trimmings) falling behind the names in the opening sequence. The noises that are heard are big thumbs as something heavy hits the ground, this noise is then followed by a classical sounding music, which creates confusion, as in like a lab , you never know what reaction you get when any two things are combined.

Special Effects: this is not really a special effect, however the color used in this opening sequence was blue, the connotation of this color is that blue is often seen used in experiments it has a chemical tone and is often used in the medical field (different chemical liquids, ambulance, doctoring scrubs).

Transitions: the transitions used are overlapping

Editing/Pace: the editing of the whole production id very slow editing, this has significance of things that happen in a lab, it all takes time.

Images: the images shown whilst the directors names etc are being shown are nail clipping , hair trimmings etc falling to the ground , then there is a very slow overlap of a man , shaving and grooming him self, the audience is then aware that this is about cleanliness, the connotation of this is that in a science lab, everything has to be looked after and put aside in certain ways, when we are introduced to the main grooming himself clearly indicates this. The other image shown if of a microscope, which also has connotations of being in a lab.
