One day
at the
CARNIVAL
We are going to need lots of exciting vocabulary within our writing! Adjectives are describing words and they are very useful to help paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Today, you need to imagine what it would be like to walk through the
middle of a carnival.
Watch the different Carnival clips. What adjectives would you use to describe…

The Fight Between Carnival and Lent
By Pieter Bruegel
We are going to be looking at three paintings showing different carnival celebrations.
Carnival in Venice -Italy
By Mauro Puppo
The Fight Between Carnival and LentBy Pieter Bruegel
This painting represents a symbolic fight between the festivals of Carnival
and Lent.
Carnival traditionally is a time of great festivity and over-eating. It takes place
just before Lent where people give up certain
foods.
Many people gave up eating meat for Lent and so Carnival was the last
time to eat favourite meaty foods.

Look very carefully at the painting and answer these
questions.
• What do you think the different buildings are and why?
• The two figures being wheeled about at thefront of the painting represent Lentand Carnival. Which is which? What do they hold?
• What food do you see?
• What are people doing in the back ground?
The Carnival ProcessionBy Adrian Moreau
The artist, Adrian Moreau, is showing people in Venice walking to a
Carnival party.
Venice has been the scene of wild and extravagant Carnival festivities for
centuries.
A key element of the festivities in Venice is the
use of masks.

Look very carefully at the painting and answer these
questions.
• What do you see in the picture?
• What are the people by the fountain doing?
• What might the little girl standing with her mother be thinking?
• Who might the figure in red be?
• What might be the smells, sights and sounds of their journey?
Carnival in Venice -Italy
By Mauro Puppo
This is a more modern painting of carnival celebrations in
Venice.
It is very different to the previous painting as it is a lot
busier and brighter.
It uses a lot of bold colours like vibrant reds and bright yellows
across the entire canvas.

Look very carefully at the painting and answer these
questions.
• What can you see in the painting?
• What do you think the building in the background is?
• How do you know it is a happy celebration?
• What costumes can you see?
• What do you think the couple in red are looking at and thinking? (front right side of the painting)
• What do you think the faint lines across the painting are?

Today we are going to be writing about a character in one of these paintings and their journey through the carnival. Choose your favourite painting and then select any person you want to write
about. Example: The red figure from Adrian Moreau’s painting The Carnival Procession
You might walk past this character and hear the music he is playing.
Example:The Fight Between Carnival and Lent by Pieter Bruegel
Walking Through the CarnivalLook carefully at the character and painting you have chosen. Look at what they might see or hear.
You might walk past this animal
and hear it grunting or
rustling.
These characters look like they’re playing a game.
They might be cheering or booing?
This character looks like she is cooking. What might you smell?
Can you hear the crackle of the fire?
What are these characters up to?Maybe you can hear them
rolling the dice?

Walking Through the CarnivalA lot is happening in each of the paintings so look carefully for ideas to write about. Make a list of
everything you are going to write about.
