This painting represents a symbolic fight between the festivals of Carnival

and Lent.

Carnival traditionally is a time of great festivity and over-eating. It takes place

just before Lent where people give up certain

foods.

Many people gave up eating meat for Lent and so Carnival was the last

time to eat favourite meaty foods.

Venice has been the scene of wild and extravagant Carnival festivities for

centuries.

A key element of the festivities in Venice is the

This is a more modern painting of carnival celebrations in

Venice.

It is very different to the previous painting as it is a lot

busier and brighter.

It uses a lot of bold colours like vibrant reds and bright yellows

across the entire canvas.
