Meriden Poetry Society
The Meriden Poetry Society will meet Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm in the Marion Cook Room. Eddie Morales, a local poet and member of the Meriden Poetry Society will read from and discuss his latest book The Sonnet of Puerto Rico. In this book, Mr. Morales introduces a new sonnet form which he has created. He calls it the Puerto Rican
Sonnet. He hopes that this form will join the other great sonnet forms of the world: The Shake-spearian, Spenserian, Petrarchan, and Spanish sonnets. This book traces the history of the Tainos people and each poem is written in both English and Spanish. Eddie was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and lived for over 30 years in the Bronx, New York before moving to
the Meriden area. He has written and published a number of books of poetry. They include: A Reason for Rhyme, The Suicide Sonnets, Count Edweird Lefang’s Rhymin’ Hallow-een, A Candle on Fire, Poems for Edna, The Burning of Bishop Nicholas Ridley, and For the Love of Nine Muses. All poets and those interest-ed in poetry are invited to attend this meeting.
Seeing the Past
Author James T. Powers will be discussing his new book Seeing the Past: Stories on the Trail of a Yankee Millwright on Thursday, October 12 at 6:30 pm in the Griffin Room. This book follows the life of a 19
th century North-
ford, Wallingford, and Windsor Locks resident, Milo Todd, as he pursues a dream to become part of the transforming industrial economy of the time.
Seeing the Past includes specific episodes in the history of Meriden that occurred during the time Milo lived in the area in-cluding stories about the early days of the Britannia industry with the Stevens Family in North-ford and then Meriden, the growth and evolution of the International Silver Company, and the development of industry in Connecticut during the 19
th century.
Seeing the Past vividly brings the past to life and connects us with the often forgotten shadows of our shared history. In doing so, we gain a better under-standing of how, through time and place, in seeing the past, we see our-selves. All are welcome to this program cosponsored by the Meriden Historical Society. Please contact the Community Services Department at (203) 630-6349 if you would like to reserve a seat or click here.
