Meriden Public Library is pleased to host the Karkowska Sisters Duo on Saturday, September 16 at 2:30 pm as they present the musical program “From Angels to Demons.”

"From Angels to Demons" presents an exciting mixture of great music with great stories and it’s all about WOMEN and their impact on the art world. At the time when the only accepted female roles in the society were that of a mother or a wife and when a pursuit of any professional career was often impossible they still managed to leave us with a surprisingly rich and diverse heritage. Often with humor and wonderful anecdotes, the program “From Angels to Demons” celebrates women in classical music, from the first teachers of music geniuses like Tekla Chopin, scandalous free

thinkers like George Sand, fictional characters like Carmen to great musicians like Maria Szymanowska, Fanny Mendelssohn or Clara Wieck. The program is both wonderfully entertaining and educational. By inserting stories about the music, countries, composers’ lives and times along with juicy anecdotes between the music, the Karkowska Sisters Duo makes the virtuoso masterpieces vividly alive and very approachable to the 21st century listener no matter his or her age or advancement in music education. The stories took years of research to collect and are greatly appreciat-ed and applauded both by music connoisseurs and "accidental music tourists" alike. In addition, their music travel through different

countries around the globe brings many a funny story from the Karkowska Sisters Duo’s own touring experience to the utmost enjoyment of the audience! Karkowska Sisters Duo is an award winning, interna-tionally acclaimed ensem-ble that performs extraordi-nary programs of virtuosity and laughter, full of beauti-ful music, unforgettable stories and humor creating spectacular entertainment for the entire family. All are welcome to this free program. If you would like to reserve a seat, contact the Community Services Department at (203) 630-6349 or visit www.meridenlibrary.org and sign up through the events calendar. Mexico in the summer of 1916. The National Guard was used to fill the void in patrolling the U.S.-Mexican border created by the departure of the Regular Army troops under General Pershing. They mostly did guard duty, received training under Regular Army officers and, in effect, prepared for their role in the U.S. Army that was sent to France in early 1917. Dave Corrigan, Museum Curator from the Museum of Connecticut History, will present a program on the Connecticut National Guard and their role in the 1916 Mexican Punitive Expedition on Tuesday, September 12 at 6:30 pm in the Griffin Room. Nearly 3,000 Connecticut National Guard troops were federalized by President Woodrow Wilson in June of 1916 and sent with nearly 150,000 other National Guard troops from around the country to Texas, Arizona and New

and he took many photo-graphs of his fellow soldiers, the town of Nogales, AZ where they were stationed and their many marches and training sessions. The service of the CT National Guard on the Mexican Border in 1916 is a little-known but significant aspect of the Guard’s and nation’s history. All are welcome to this free program which is cospon-sored by the Meriden Historical Society.

Ageism Awareness

Jane Wisialowski, Director of Business Development, Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut, will present an Ageism Awareness program at the Library on Thursday, September 28 at 1:00 pm. This presentation provides an overview of ageism and showcases how this often overlooked barrier

exists across most communities in the U.S. Ageism puts unfair limita-tions on older adults’ abilities to live to their fullest potential and devalues them as individuals. Join us in an effort to create a culture where life experiences and achievements of older individuals are celebrated. The ultimate goal is to bring

back the belief that aging is a natural part of life and not a problem to be solved. All are welcome to this free program cosponsored by Castle Craig Adult Learning Center and Meriden Public Library. If you would like to reserve a seat, contact the Community Services Department at (203) 630-6349.
