ROP meeting at ASTEH Rawalpindi
ROP is an emerging cause of infant blindness. This occurs because of extremely immature and low birth
weight infants. Proper identification in the beginning of disease can prevent infant from becoming
blind. In Pakistan, very few centers have the facility to screen ROP. ASTEH has been conducting ROP
Screening in various city hospitals for last two years. This year a special ROP conference was held at
ASTEH Rawalpindi to arrive at a consensus for uniform guidelines at national level for screening
protocol. The senior faculty in ophthalmology, neonatology and pediatrics from the city as well as from
USA participated in the meeting. “ Very useful recommendations for health policy makers have been
made which will prove a landmark in the history of ROP in Pakistan” commented the head of ASTEH
Pediatric Ophthalmology, Dr. Sorath Noorani.

Aamish undergoes miraculous surgery
Four months old Aamish is the only son of Tanveer Akhtar, a laborer, belonging to a poor village of
District Attock. Aamish severely injured his left eye. His father was advised by emergency department
to take his son to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi. The child was thoroughly examined by
Child Eye specialist Dr. Nusrat Sharif. Belonging to a poor family, Amish's father couldn't afford
surgical cost and all expenses were borne by the Hospital. The very next day he was successfully
operated by Dr. Shama Khan. The news of his successful surgery brought relief to the disturbed parents
who burst into tears and were lost for words. They were deeply thankful to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital
staff and its generous donors for restoring their son's sight and saving him from a dark future. During the
follow up session after the operation, Aamish's mother was extremely happy and satisfied and said
joyfully, “All praise is to Allah Who sends these angels to restore my child's vision”. For the interest of
readers, kindly keep your small children out of reach of pointed scissors, spring action toys, sharp
pencils and geometry box instruments.
