The FFC delegation headed by Brig®Mr. Munawar Hayat Khan donated Rs. 1.32 million for medical

equipment for Al-Shifa Centre for Community Ophthalmology (ACCO) which is providing school

screening and modern eye care services to the patients at their door steps in remote areas of the country.

Fauji Fertilizers and Pakistan Petroleum donate funds for equipment.

AST President, Lt Gen® Mr. Hamid Javaid informed that the Trust has enhanced its outreach program

by doubling the target of patient screening from existing 70,000 patients to 150,000 patients during the

year. The hallmark of this program is both the eye and ENT screening of young school going children.

FFC donated Rs 1.328 million for the purchase of electro medical equipment.

Pakistan Petroleum Limited also donated Rs 7.5 million for the purchase of two portable

Phacoemulsification machines for our Sukkur and Rawalpindi Hospitals. These portable machines will

bring revolution in the quality of surgery during our outreach programs.

We are grateful to Fauji Fertilizers and PPL for this valuable support.

Fred Hollows Foundation supports capacity building of our Glaucoma Department

Fred Hollows Foundation is a long standing partner of AST since its early days. This year FHF has

agreed to upgrade our glaucoma department through provision of equipment and strengthening of

infrastructure at ASTEH Rawalpindi. More clinics, additional staff, training workshops for regional

ophthalmologists and specialized training abroad of our faculty are other salient features of this project.

ASTEH Muzaffarabad starts a Satellite Clinic in Muzaffarabad City

Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Muzaffarabad has opened a new Evening Satellite Clinic in the city at

Muzaffarabad General Hospital located in the heart of city adjacent to CMH Muzaffarabad. This is a

very useful facility for the convenience of those coming from far flung areas as well as for those who

find it difficult to spare time during the day This Clinic runs between 17:00 to 19:00 hours in the

evening.

ROP meeting at ASTEH Rawalpindi

ROP is an emerging cause of infant blindness. This occurs because of extremely immature and low birth

weight infants. Proper identification in the beginning of disease can prevent infant from becoming

blind. In Pakistan, very few centers have the facility to screen ROP. ASTEH has been conducting ROP

Screening in various city hospitals for last two years. This year a special ROP conference was held at

ASTEH Rawalpindi to arrive at a consensus for uniform guidelines at national level for screening

protocol. The senior faculty in ophthalmology, neonatology and pediatrics from the city as well as from

USA participated in the meeting. “ Very useful recommendations for health policy makers have been

made which will prove a landmark in the history of ROP in Pakistan” commented the head of ASTEH

Pediatric Ophthalmology, Dr. Sorath Noorani.

Aamish undergoes miraculous surgery

Four months old Aamish is the only son of Tanveer Akhtar, a laborer, belonging to a poor village of

District Attock. Aamish severely injured his left eye. His father was advised by emergency department

to take his son to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi. The child was thoroughly examined by

Child Eye specialist Dr. Nusrat Sharif. Belonging to a poor family, Amish's father couldn't afford

surgical cost and all expenses were borne by the Hospital. The very next day he was successfully

operated by Dr. Shama Khan. The news of his successful surgery brought relief to the disturbed parents

who burst into tears and were lost for words. They were deeply thankful to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital

staff and its generous donors for restoring their son's sight and saving him from a dark future. During the

follow up session after the operation, Aamish's mother was extremely happy and satisfied and said

joyfully, “All praise is to Allah Who sends these angels to restore my child's vision”. For the interest of

readers, kindly keep your small children out of reach of pointed scissors, spring action toys, sharp

pencils and geometry box instruments.
