An identity is a statement that is true for any value of the variable, except those for which either side of the equation is undefined.

A trigonometric equation is an equation that involves at least one trigonometric function of a variable.

A trigonometric equation is called a trigonometric identity if it is true for all values of the variable for which both sides of the equation are defined.
