and successful. We look forward to your continued support.
Nightingale is a great place to learn and we extend a warm welcome to returning

SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
Supervision is provided by school staff before school
at 8:40-9:00 and after school from 3:00-3:15. We also
have dedicated supervision aides at recess and lunch
time on the playground. In addition, we have a number
of our support staff who are monitoring the students
during break times. We want to take this opportunity
to thank our staff for their vigilance in ensuring that
sound supervision is conducted during break times.
Please do not drop off your child prior to 8:40 and
ensure that pick up takes place before supervision
ends. Thank you.
The Family Accident Reimbursement Plan
(FARP) The kids plus student accident insurance program
has changed and is now called The Family Accident
Reimbursement Plan (FARP). This coverage is still
provided by Industrial Alliance and is a voluntary
plan which offers coverage for students and their
families against accidental injury, unexpected
medical expenses and critical illness. The Family
Accident Reimbursement Plan is ideal for
supplementing costs not covered by provincial health
insurance or existing employer extended health and
dental plans. Families can register online to
participate in the Plan by using the URL provided
below:
https://www.solutionsinsurance.com/aonbc
If any of families have questions about the program
they can contact Industrial Alliance directly using
the following contact information:
Phone: 1.800.266.5667

Student Sign-Out Procedures
It is of paramount importance that you sign
your child/children out at the office if you
are picking them up during school hours. If
the students are not signed out, they will be
considered ‘missing’ and a search will be
initiated immediately. In the event if we are
unable to locate the child or reach the
parents the school will be calling 911.
Thank you.
Change of Address or Phone Number?
Please inform the Office if you have changed your
address or telephone number. For safety and
enrolment purposes, it is very important that the
school office has this information.
LOST AND FOUND Please check the lost and found container which is
located in the basement. Please pay frequent
visits as any items not claimed will be donated to
charities.
StrongStart is a free drop-in program offered to
parents and caregivers with children ages 0 to 5.
We emphasize learning through play, language and
positive social interactions. For more information,
please call 604-713-4445 or check the
StrongStart website at:
http://www.vsb.bc.ca/programs/strong-start
Nightingale StrongStart is now open in the
afternoon! Drop-in anytime from 12:30pm to
3:00pm Monday to Friday. It is located in the
building at the corner of E. 12th Ave. and St.
George St.
TECHNOLOGY
We ask that students do NOT bring technology to
school. It is important that students have the
opportunity to engage in physical play rather than
being on devices during break times. Research on
the importance play shows how play contributes to
the overall well being of young students. Free
Play is a great way for students to develop their
cognitive and creative skills. If you want your
child to have access to a phone for safety
reasons, ask them to keep their phones in their
back packs and not use them during school hours.
Please note that in the event the student is
accessing devices without permission from school
adults, the device will be secured by the school
adult and parent will need to arrange to pick up
the device. We appreciate your cooperation.
Thank you.

The Vancouver School Board offers the service of purchasing
basic school supplies in bulk at wholesale prices and passing
the cost savings on to families. The School Supply Fee for 2019 – 2020 is $35.00 per student. This fee covers basic consumable school supplies used for students’ personal use such as paper, writing tools, glue sticks, erasers, exercise books and art supplies. Supplies are provided for the full year.
REGISTER TO PAY YOUR CHILDS FEES ONLINE! Please go to https://vsb.schoolcashonline.co or visit our website at https://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools/florence-nightingale. All families must register by September. Should you encounter any difficulties, call the parent help desk at 1(866) 961-1803.
SUPPLEMENTARY FEES Student Agenda/Planner – $5.00
Students at Nightingale will be using an Agenda/Planner in some of the classes. School agendas/planners are a valuable tool for teaching children how to organize and plan for school. While students are not required to have an agenda/planner it is designed to assist students with the skills of organization and time management and is a very useful communication tool often used between teachers and families.
Performance Fee – $5.00
We are pleased to enrich your child’s learning through a wide variety of performances this year. This supplementary fee supports the school in bringing in talented and professional theatrical and musical performers that align with a particular educational theme. Parent support has made these opportunities possible and we appreciate your continued contribution.
Activity Fee – $10.00 This year we will be offering Project Chef, etc. Parent support for this activity was confirmed last school year and we appreciate your contribution towards this opportunity.
Workbooks – $12.00 Some classes will be bringing home a Practice and Homework Book to support their learning. The material supplements the classroom math program. The workbook is available for purchase at the cost of $12.00. Students are not obligated to purchase the workbook, and may opt to use their copy as a reference textbook instead, meaning the workbook will be returned at the end of the school year for another student to use in the future. Students opting to use the workbook as a textbook will be responsible for ensuring that it remains unmarked and in excellent condition in order to return the workbook at the end of the year.
Field Studies – To be determined throughout the school year at the classroom level Throughout the school year your child’s teacher may plan supplementary learning opportunities at locations outside of the school and request monies towards entrance fees, transportation or equipment rental. Your child’s teacher will communicate this information to you directly.
FINANCIAL HARDSHIP
As a reminder, the Vancouver School Board will not deny a child access to the school supplies required for his or her educational program because of financial hardship. Nor will any child be excluded from activities where a fee is charged. If at any time there is a financial challenge, please contact the school Principal, Ms. Morgan. All requests will be treated
confidentially.

AIRS Program at Nightingale
The AIRS program began in 2015 with a vision for restoring equitable access to the visual arts within Vancouver elementary schools. We have a dedicated studio space at Nightingale to enable a long-term artist in residence to work alongside teachers to provide ongoing, meaningful art engagements for children across the whole school. For more information, we invite you to access the site at airsprogram.org Much appreciation to Maggie Milne (AIRS Director) and Colleen Mieczaniec (AIRS Lead Teacher) for advocating for AIRS.
