Spring Greetings Grizzly Families!
The Grizzly Den is full of opportunity
and was the hub of many activities dur-
ing April and will be the center of family
and community fun in the month to
come!
Our Student Parliament has been
working hard over the last month! They
organized many events including Jersey
Day, Autism Awareness Day and Inter-
national Day of Pink. Student parliament
and class reps are leading the way in
kindness and awareness. On April 10th,
International day of Pink, student parlia-
ment ran an assembly honouring our
Grizzly culture of inclusivity, care and
kindness. Further details are found
within the newsletter.
Our school council is working
hard supporting our school. Many
thanks to Katelyn Good for the incredi-
ble bake sale she ran at Robotics. On
Saturday May 4th GPS families and the
Gravenhurst community are invited to
spend the morning with us for a day
of family fun at the Grizzly SWAP N’
PLAY!
You may have noticed a greening
of our school space….Living walls are
coming soon to walls near you! Liv-
ing walls are just that….full of living
plants allowing our students to de-
velop a sense of the important role
plants play in our environment and
for their own health and well-being.
Mr. Williams and I have been
thrilled to serve as Acting Principal
and Teacher Administrative Assis-
tant/Acting Vice Principal supporting
the educational journey of your chil-
dren here in the Grizzly Den. We
welcome Mr. Goldring back to GPS
when his current role as acting su-
perintendent is finished in the early
days of May.
In learning and well-being,

INTERNATIONAL DAY Of PINK
April 11th was International Day of Pink, a day to cele-
brate the strength found in diversity, the sense of be-
longing found in inclusivity and the feeling of happi-ness
found in care and kindness.
On Wednesday April 11th, our school parliament,
educators, and students were invited to share their
learning about the WAY of PINK. We heard from
school parliament about what wearing pink repre-
sents, we heard from a student who shared a story
about diversity and viewed a drama piece rooted in
inclusivity as we rounded out our assembly with our
Grizzly song, built on high expectations, care and
kindness. Thank you for continuing to learn about,
promote and share the qualities of a caring, kind
inclusive and diverse community with each other!

ROBOTICS
On Thursday April 18th, GPS hosted the annual TLDSB RoboFair. Over 30 teams from across the board travelled to program and compete in prob-lem-solving and Sumobot competitions. Our Prima-ry, Junior and Intermediate teams all fared well in their respective divisions. The Primary team placed 4th overall while the Intermediate team rose to take the championship with their Sumobot. Congratula-tions to all teams!
SELF-Regulation CORNER
Earlier this year we shared the definition of
self-regulation with you which includes the
ability to focus attention, manage one’s emo-
tions, thinking, behavior and feelings. This
month we encourage everyone to learn more
about self-regulation by sharing pod casts
with you that explore the in’s and out’s of
self-regulation through story and conversa-
tion. The following sitewill be helpful:

SCHOOL COUNCIL
Happy May! Here at the GPS School Council, we are very excited for this month's Swap & Play. MAY 4th is going to be a great day full of fun and deals for any-one who joins. The best part? Most of it is completely free! Come meet some reptiles with Scales Nature Park, or have a family photo shoot with a photogra-pher. There are lots of deals on kids clothing, toys and other items, as well as food provided by the GHS Hospitality program. For more details, take a look at
the insert in this month's newsletter.
Of course, the Swap & Play isn't the only thing hap-pening - we've got Science North joining us in the evening on May 15th for a great experience explor-ing how humans push the limits - join us for pizza and fun that night! All of it is free, and we'd love to have you there. If you're looking for updates about school council, please email us: graven-hurstpublicsc@gmail.com.

GrIZZLIES are ReADERS!
READ…. Every day!
Our School improvement reading goal is:
Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in
2019 will increase by 12%.
If we support students developing decoding and
comprehension strategies, including fluency, at their
instructional level then students will be able to inde-
pendently read and understand a text.
————————————————————————-
Encourage your child to read each and every day.
This might look like you reading to them, reading a
book, reading an article or reading information on a
website. Reading can be thought of as the process
of decoding or figuring out the actual words on the
page while simultaneously comprehending or un-
derstanding what those words mean. In order to
understand what they read, children must be able
to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or
silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in
phrases and add appropriate expression.
One thing you can do at home to support your
child’s developing fluency is to set aside 20 minutes
each and every day to read with your child. Continue
to encourage your child to read aloud to you and
you read aloud to them...taking turns. You can ask
questions or use prompts such as the following:
What did you notice about my voice?
or
That’s right! My voice takes a break or stops and
pauses when my eyes see a period.
Happy Reading!

GrIZZLIES are mathematicians!
MATH….EVERY Day!
Our School improvement math goal is:
Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in 2019
will increase by 12%.
If we support student learning opportunities to develop
automaticity, thinking flexibly and reasonably about
numbers then their ability to represent and solve prob-
lems in measurement and NSN will improve.
———————————————————————-
We want our students to see the power in math and
deeply understand the actions that happen when solv-
ing problems. The way we show or word a problem
can help with this. Start, change or result unknown are
three different problem types that help us see the rela-
tionships between operations (addition/subtraction,
and multiplication/division).
One thing you can do to help your child develop their
math skills with operations is to help them see the rela-
tionships between the operations. Wording questions
differently helps with this. For example,
16 birds sat in a tree. A cat climbed the tree and some
birds flew away. 5 birds stayed in the tree. How many
flew away?
This type of a question helps your child see that addi-
tion and subtraction work inversely. It is an example of
a change unknown question because we know the
amount of birds we started with and ended with; we
have to solve for the amount of unknown birds that
flew away.
When solving this problem, it could be modeled as 16 birds less the amount that flew away equals 5. It would
look like this in a standard algorithm:
16—? = 5 5 + ? =16
