Day of Service in DuarteDay of Service in Duarte

On January 9, 2013, The Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley

sponsored the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in the City of Duarte.

Over 40 youth volunteers from Duarte High School helped with planting a drought-tolerant garden at the entrance to the newly refurbished Duarte High School sports stadium.

Youth volunteers worked hard planting strawberries and coral bells.

Volunteer Center staff also helped and showed the teens how to get the planting started.

An estimated 100 volunteer hours were completed during this Day of Service.

On January 17, 2013, City of Duarte held Remembrance Ceremony for Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Performing Arts Center in Duarte.

This ceremony featured student performances, essay award winners, and guest speakers, such as Dr. Terrance Roberts. Dr. Roberts braved hostile students and as he was one of the first few to enter a desegregated high school in Little Rock, AK during the 1950s. His speech was inspiration for all in attendance.

The MLK Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony was also featured on the Access Duarte website, and was also covered by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

As a result of this wonderful MLK Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony, the Volunteer Center and the City of Duarte are now planning a third day of service.

A larger scale Day of Service in Duarte will be planned for the next school year, and will utilize adult volunteers. Stay tuned for more!
