Mahler’s‘SymphonyofaThousand,’JurassicPark,RufusWainwrighttop2018-19SDSOlineup

SIOUXFALLS,S.D.—TheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra(SDSO)willpresentGustavMahler’smonumental“SymphonyofaThousand,”live-scoreatheater-qualityscreeningofthesci-fispectacularJurassicParkandaccompanysinger-songwriterRufusWainwrightaspartofablockbusterlineupannouncedSaturdayforits2018-19season.

TheSDSO’sClassicalSeriesfeaturesworksfromBeethoven,Handel,Mozart,ProkofievandTchaikovsky,aswellasanewMusicUnwoundprogramexploringtherootsofAmericanmusic.TheclassicalcalendarcrescendostoSDSO’sApril27-28,2019,performanceofMahler’sSymphonyNo.8inEbMajor,whichfeaturedmorethan1,000musicianswhenMahlerandtheMunichPhilharmonicdebutedittoravesfromcrowdsandcriticsin1910.

MaestroDavidDeltaGier,SDSO’smusicdirector,characterizesSymphonyNo.8asthe“MountEverestofsymphonicpieces.”TheSDSO’spresentationwillfeatureanorchestraconsideredlargeevenbyMahler'sstandards,eightvocalsoloistsandthreeareachoirs:theSouthDakotaSymphonyChorus,theBlackHillsStateUniversityChorusandtheSouthDakotaStateUniversityChorus.TheperformancecapstheSDSO’s13-seasonMahlercycle,andGiersaidit’samarker,inalotofways,ofthegrowthoftheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra.

“It’sthefirsttimethispiecehasbeendoneinthisregion,ever,”Giersaid.“Anyorchestra,anywhereintheworld,kindofhastopulloutallthestopstomakeithappen.It’sabigevent.”

OnOct.13,theSDSOwillpairBeethoven’s“Heroic”SymphonyNo.3withCarlNielsen'sFluteConcerto,whichshowcasesPrincipalFlutistWilliamCedeñoTorres.TheSDSOwillalsopresentthepremiereofPrincipalOboistJeffreyPaul’stonepoemMniWiconi(WaterisLife).Theorchestra’sMarch2performanceofProkofiev’sSymphonyNo.5willfeatureEcuadoriancellistFranciscoVila-HaasoftheSphinxprogram,whichisdedicatedtotransforminglivesthroughthepowerofdiversityinthearts.

TheSDSO’sPopsSeries,whichhasbeenexpandedtofiveprograms,featuresaFeb.9-10screeningofStevenSpielberg’saction-packedadventureJurassicPark.SDSO’sliveorchestrawillperformcomposerJohnWilliams’ruggedscoreinperfectblendwitharecordedtrackofthemovie’sdialogueandsoundeffects.

Wainwright,atalentedcomposer,songwriter,pianistandcroonerwho’sbeenpraisedbytheNewYorkTimesforhis“genuineoriginality,”comestotheWashingtonPavilionforaone-nightperformanceonOct.27.WainwrighthascollaboratedwithsuchgreatsasEltonJohn,DavidByrne,BoyGeorge,JoniMitchellandthePetShopBoys,andthepairingwiththeSDSObuildsonthesuccessofa2017concertwithBenFolds.
