FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 3, 2018 Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand,’ Jurassic Park, Rufus Wainwright top 2018-19 SDSO lineup SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) will present Gustav Mahler’s monumental “Symphony of a Thousand,” live-score a theater-quality screening of the sci-fi spectacular Jurassic Park and accompany singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright as part of a blockbuster lineup announced Saturday for its 2018-19 season. The SDSO’s Classical Series features works from Beethoven, Handel, Mozart, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, as well as a new Music Unwound program exploring the roots of American music. The classical calendar crescendos to SDSO’s April 27-28, 2019, performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in Eb Major, which featured more than 1,000 musicians when Mahler and the Munich Philharmonic debuted it to raves from crowds and critics in 1910. Maestro David Delta Gier, SDSO’s music director, characterizes Symphony No. 8 as the “Mount Everest of symphonic pieces.” The SDSO’s presentation will feature an orchestra considered large even by Mahler's standards, eight vocal soloists and three area choirs: the South Dakota Symphony Chorus, the Black Hills State University Chorus and the South Dakota State University Chorus. The performance caps the SDSO’s 13-season Mahler cycle, and Gier said it’s a marker, in a lot of ways, of the growth of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. “It’s the first time this piece has been done in this region, ever,” Gier said. “Any orchestra, anywhere in the world, kind of has to pull out all the stops to make it happen. It’s a big event.” On Oct. 13, the SDSO will pair Beethoven’s “Heroic” Symphony No. 3 with Carl Nielsen's Flute Concerto, which showcases Principal Flutist William Cedeño Torres. The SDSO will also present the premiere of Principal Oboist Jeffrey Paul’s tone poem Mni Wiconi (Water is Life). The orchestra’s March 2 performance of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 will feature Ecuadorian cellist Francisco Vila-Haas of the Sphinx program, which is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. The SDSO’s Pops Series, which has been expanded to five programs, features a Feb. 9-10 screening of Steven Spielberg’s action-packed adventure Jurassic Park. SDSO’s live orchestra will perform composer John Williams’ rugged score in perfect blend with a recorded track of the movie’s dialogue and sound effects. Wainwright, a talented composer, songwriter, pianist and crooner who’s been praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” comes to the Washington Pavilion for a one-night performance on Oct. 27. Wainwright has collaborated with such greats as Elton John, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell and the Pet Shop Boys, and the pairing with the SDSO builds on the success of a 2017 concert with Ben Folds. Other Pops Series programs feature the repertoire of ‘70s Swedish sensation ABBA and music from the eight Harry Potter films, and the SDSO’s popular Christmas spectacular ‘Tis the Season returns, complete with dancing Santas.
