● Offer age-appropriate distances and skill-based events
● Increase the number of racing opportunities for all skaters
● Create a more challenging racing experience for top-ranked skaters
● Create a more inclusive racing experience for lower-ranked skaters
● Encourage skater participation in Long Track and Short Track
● Provide a clear path towards provincial rankings and national championships
● Reduce wait times between races
● Reduce the amount of travel for younger skaters by raising the profile of local meets
● Reduce the administrative work for volunteers

FUNDAMENTALS RACING SERIES
Local Club Organized Events
Girls 10 years and younger / Boys 11 years and younger
● Any size Ice pad is acceptable
● 2 hours to 1 Day and can be held during regular club practice times
● Start and end times are flexible
● Races are a combination of traditional racing and skill-based events
● Age class or Ability groupings. Primarily for younger age skaters but also welcomes older skaters who are new to speed skating and/or new to racing.
● Traditional racing distances and skill-based events. Track size should be 100m.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION RACING SERIES
Regional East, Central, West and Flex
Girls 11-14 years / Boys 12-15 years
● Olympic Size Ice pad but NHL size also acceptable
● 1 Day Meet (except Provincial Championships which is 2 days)
● Skaters are required to stay within their assigned region based on their home club.
● Racing on a 100.0m track
● Open Class. Skaters will be grouped into Divisions based on 400m seed time within the larger open class format to
provide the best possible racing experience.
● 3 fixed distances (200m, 400m, 1500m) and a 4th distance Aim is 7-8 races per meet.
● Boys 15 need to select at the start of the season whether they will race the Introduction to Competition racing series or the Competition-Development racing series.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION RACING SERIES SENIOR AND MASTERS
Regional East, Central, West and Flex
Senior 23-29 years and Masters 30+ years
● 1 Day Meet (year end Provincial Championships)
● Skaters are required to stay within their assigned region based on their home club.
● Racing on a 111.12m track
● Open Class. Skaters will be grouped into Divisions based on 500m seed time within the larger open class format to
provide the best possible racing experience.
● 3 fixed distances (500m, 777m, 1000m) and a 4th distance Aim is 7-8 races per meet. Max 16 racers.
● Skaters who are 23 years of age and older may apply for racing eligibility for the season to participate in the
Competition-Development Racing Series.
COMPETITION-DEVELOPMENT RACING SERIES
Provincial level
Girls 15-22 / Boys 15-22 / Senior or Master skaters if applicable
● Olympic Size Ice pad
● 2 Day Meets. Racing on 111.12m track.
● Open Class. Skaters will be grouped into Divisions within the larger open class format based on 500m + 1500m times to provide the best possible racing experience.
● 3 fixed distances (500m, 1000m, 1500m) and a 4th distance. Aim is 12 races per meet (500m x 4, 1000m x 4, 1500m x 3, final 3000m
● Meets Sept – Dec will base advancement on times. Meets Jan-Mar will base advancement on placement.
● Skaters who are 23 years of age and older may apply for racing eligibility for the season to participate in the
Competition-Development Racing Series.

PLEASE NOTE…..• An Information Manual will be developed by OSSA (by
September 1, 2012) to provide direction on FUNdamentals meet formats and practice sessions
• Speed Skating Canada equipment requirements (Regulation D3-100) will be in effect for all Intro to Comp and Comp-Dev meets
• Regional designation for Intro to Comp meets are firm
• Boys 15 must complete racing form by September 15, 2012
• Senior and Master skaters must complete Senior Eligibility form to skate Comp-Devt by September 15, 2012
• Coaching certification requirements are firm. Courses will be offered in late August – September - October
