CRITICAL COMPONENTS

GSM MODEM • Accepts a SIM card and operates over a subscription to a

mobile operator.

• For mobile operators GSM modem and mobile ‘feel’ the same.

• Allows COMPUTER to communicate over the mobile network.

• Exposes an interface that allows APPLICATIONS (eg. NowSMS) TO SEND AND RECEIVE MESSAGES.

• For the purpose GSM modem must support an “EXTENDED AT COMMAND SET” as defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 and 3GPP TS 27.005 specifications.

• Quick and efficient way to get started with SMS, because a SPECIAL SUBSCRIPTION TO AN SMS SERVICE PROVIDER IS NOT REQUIRED

• Sender is pays for the message delivery, hence in some parts of the world GSM modem act as COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR RECEIVING MESSAGES.

8051 based MICROCONTROLLER FEATURES:

RAM – 128 Bytes (Data memory)

ROM – 4Kbytes (ROM signify the on – chip program space)

Serial Port – Using UART makes it simpler to interface for serial communication.

Two 16 bit Timer/ Counter

Input/output Pins – 4 Ports of 8 bits each on a single chip.

Interrupt Sources

8 – bit ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)

Harvard Memory Architecture – It has 16 bit Address bus (each of RAM and ROM) and 8 bit Data Bus.

8051 can execute 1 million one-cycle instructions per second with a clock frequency of 12MHz.

WHY 8051:

Ease-of-use

Market availability

Less power usage

Smaller processing power

More integrated features like RF and USB

Smaller form factors
