Effective note-taking • Effective note-taking is a valuable skill

for retaining, remembering, reciting and recalling information.

• Without good notes you could sit through an entire semester of classes and not have anything to prepare you for the exams.

• If you follow these simple steps and tips you will not only learn how to take notes, you’ll learn how to take notes that will help you apply knowledge and retain material.

Effective note-taking • Organize yourself• Position yourself in an area of the

room where you can effectively see and hear the teacher

• Think about what you want /need to retain

• DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

Create a system of note-taking that allows you to write quickly and get down basic concepts, but which will also allow you to quickly find information in your notes later.

Use…

• Short and meaningful phrases, and abbreviate when necessary such as drawing arrows for increase/decrease.

• Utilize meaningful symbols • Each lecture should have it’s own page or

series of pages. This will help keep you organized. Make sure to date and title the pages so that you can find them more easily later on.

Abbreviations which often occur in English texts:

• e.g. exempli gratia (for example)• i.e. id est (that is)• etc. et cetera (and other things)• a.m. ante meridiem (before noon)• p.m. post meridiem (after noon)• BC Before Christ• AD Anno Domini – the year of our Lord (after

Christ)

Recognize main ideas by signal words that indicate something important is to follow. • Your teacher is not going to say “Write this

down” when s/he states an important new idea or gives an example, but s/he will use signals to telegraph what s/he is doing. For example; There are three reasons why...– First... second... third...– The significance of _____ is...– The impact of ______ is...– From this, we can see...

And…• Often, students are

deceived into thinking that because they understand everything that is said in class they will therefore remember it. This is dead wrong! Write it down.

• Don't keep notes on oddly shaped pieces of paper. Keep notes in order and in one place.

Revision

• Remember, we forget rapidly so review your notes regularly. This is the only way to achieve lasting memory.

Writing

Skriv fem setninger;

• 1 først én setning der du presenterer emnet du vil bruke.• 2, 3, 4 Deretter nevner du tre moment som utvikler emnet;

hvert moment sin setning.• 5 Avslutt med å lage én setning som sammenfatter.

Og så kan du utvide hver av disse fem setningene til et avsnitt.Dermed har du en femavsnitts skisse, med begynnelse - midte -

ModelltekstTHESIS I think the council should support sporting arenas in all

major community centres in Narvik.

POSITION (Hvor?)

Firstly, young people will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sporting activities. Secondly, they will learn about how to play sports. Finally, it may prevent vandalism and other anti-social behaviour associated with a lack of recreational facilities.

PREVIEW

ARGUMENT(Topic Statement)

During the school term many young people wish to participate in sporting activities after school. Participating in sporting activities has been shown

POINT

to improve general fitness which in turn helps improve performance at school.

ELABORATION

ARGUMENT(Topic statement)

Another reason is that sports clubs can concentrate on the actual sporting activities in their clubs and leave the maintenance of the arenas to professional employed by the council. Many voluntary sports leaders in the local clubs feel

POINT

that it is not their responsibility to run sporting arenas because they neither have the time nor the qualifications.

ARGUMENT (Topic statement) Moreover, by providing sporting areas in all

community centres

POINT

all young people in Narvik will have access to a variety of physical activities, year round.

RE-STATEMENT OF THESIS

These are the main reasons why I think Narvik council should run and maintain sporting centres in all major community centres. As they say “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.
