Case Study: Hall Memorial School

• We are going to view this video (about 3 minutes) about a rural school that transformed instruction and learning.

• Questions to consider as we watch:– Why do students become engaged with

this technology?– What kinds of activities does the video

showcase?– How do the teachers use the IWB in the

classroom?

Kids and Technology

• Today’s students, millenials grew up with the Internet.

• Access to unlimited information that can be accessed at any time .

• U.S. Department if Education (U.S> DOE), Office of Educational Technology (OET). Toward A New Golden Age in American Education: How the Internet, the Law and Today’s Expectations are Revolutionizing Expectations. Washington, D.C., 2004.

• Children spend more time online than watching television.

• 94% of children use the Internet for school-related research.

• 71% of children rely on Internet sources for projects.

• 48% of teens think that the Internet improves their relationships.

Robert Marzano

“If an experienced teacher who has been using technology for 2 or more years, uses the board appropriately for 75% of the class time, and has enough training to be confident in his or her use of technology, student achievement gains were highest.”

Impact on Struggling LearnersLearning Types

Reaching all Learners

Let’s look at this “short vowel” lesson in a special education classroom.

Some questions to consider as we watch:

What intelligences are incorporated in the lesson?

What are the students doing during the lesson?

• The Magic Key website is aimed at children aged 5-6 years and follows the TV programmes in which Kipper, Biff, Chip, Wilf, Wilma and Floppy go off on their adventures.
