Case Study: Hall Memorial School

• We are going to view this video (about 3 minutes) about a rural school that transformed instruction and learning.

• Questions to consider as we watch:– Why do students become engaged with

this technology?– What kinds of activities does the video

showcase?– How do the teachers use the IWB in the

classroom?

Kids and Technology

• Today’s students, millenials grew up with the Internet.

• Access to unlimited information that can be accessed at any time .

• Many students prefer to use information found on the Internet because they feel it is more abundant, accessible, an d up-to-date (U.S. DOE 2004).

• U.S. Department if Education (U.S> DOE), Office of Educational Technology (OET). Toward A New Golden Age in American Education: How the Internet, the Law and Today’s Expectations are Revolutionizing Expectations. Washington, D.C., 2004.

Millenials’ Demographics (Patrick, 2004)

• Children spend more time online than watching television.

• 94% of children use the Internet for school-related research.

• 71% of children rely on Internet sources for projects.

• 48% of teens think that the Internet improves their relationships.

• 24% of teens have created their own Web pages or sites.

• 43% of children (ages 4-18) in 2003 owned at least one wireless device.

Page 8: Iwb seminar slides april

How about our schools?

• 99% of schools are connected to the Internet.• 92% of instructional rooms have Internet

access.• 23% of public schools use wireless networks.• 8% of public schools lent laptops to students.• On average, schools have a 5:1 student to

computer ratio.Patrick, Susan (2004) e-Learning and Students today: Options for No Child Left

Behind. Speech presented at the No Child Left Behind Summit. Orlando, FL., July 2004.

Robert Marzano

“If an experienced teacher who has been using technology for 2 or more years, uses the board appropriately for 75% of the class time, and has enough training to be confident in his or her use of technology, student achievement gains were highest.”

Reaching all Learners

Let’s look at this “short vowel” lesson in a special education classroom.

Some questions to consider as we watch:

What intelligences are incorporated in the lesson?

What are the students doing during the lesson?

Magic Key

• The BBC has a wonderful interactive site called The Magic Key based on the Oxford Reading Tree learning program.  The site contains nine literacy "adventures" for children that all work great with the SMARTBoard Interactive Whiteboard.

• The Magic Key website is aimed at children aged 5-6 years and follows the TV programmes in which Kipper, Biff, Chip, Wilf, Wilma and Floppy go off on their adventures.
