The Ministry of Science and Technology
(MCT), understanding that:
1. Studies of biodiversity need to be
integrated and conducted over large areas;
2. Scientific information on biodiversity is
important for education, environmental
modelling and to support public policies;
established in 2004 the
Program for Planned Biodiversity
Studies
PPBioProgram national scope
First stage prioritized:
1. Amazon Region megabiodiversity
2. Semi-Arid Region adaptations to a harsh environment.
General objective
Coordinate regional and
national expertise to expand
and disseminate knowledge on
Brazilian biodiversity in a
planned and coordinated
manner.
Specific objectives
To support implementation and maintenance
of Biota inventory networks;
To support maintenance, expansion and
digitization of national biological collections;
To support research and development on
biodiversity thematic fields;
To develop strategic actions for biodiversity
research policies

GOAL:
Articulate and improve
cooperation between
institutions involved in
biodiversity studies in the
Amazon Region.
INPAMPEG
Used for:
• Planning reserve systems.
• Planning land use (zoning) within individual reserves.
• Monitoring effects of local, regional and global impacts.
• Evaluating resources and establishing quotas.
• Bioprospecting.
SURVEYS
Constraints for Amazonian biodiversity knowledgeSURVEYS
USELESSUSELESS
Lack of previous standardization in collecting biological data techniques in order to make comparisons between existing researches.
USEFULUSEFUL
• Many researchers are undertaking surveys of the fauna
and flora, but most just generate species lists.
• We need to know:
• Resource abundance.
• Resource x environment relationships to
determine extraction quotas.
• Complementarity for ecological-economic zoning.
SURVEYS
SURVEYSBecause of the multiplicity of potential indicators and the great diversity of users, integrated surveys are orders of magnitude more efficient than isolated studies.
Access/geographic coordinates;
Topography (altitude, slope);
Soils (granulometry, nutrients, etc.);
Vegetation structure;
Vegetation composition;
Soil water availability;
Distance to free water.
Minimum requisites to understand the distribution of most ...
Terrestrial animals: Aquatic animals:
Size of water body;
Current velocity or outflow;
Physical/chemical characteristics
of the water.
To be efficient, a survey/monitoring system must have the following characteristics:
SURVEYS
Be standardized.
Permit integrated surveys for all taxa.
Be large enough for monitoring all elements of the biodiversity and ecosystem processes.
Be modular, to permit comparisons with less intensive samples taken over very large areas.
Be compatible with existing iniciatives.
Be implementable with existing manpower.
Make the data available quickly in a usable form to managers and other stakeholders.
The standard PPBio
plots are only 25 km2.
There are 6 1-km
trails in the N-S
direction and 6 1-km
trails in the E-W
direction.

INFORMATION ACCESS
Metadata are essential to data management.
Metadata describe the data and how they were collected.
must be made available imediately, sometimes before the data are
collected, so that other researchers and managers know what is being
collected, when, and where. They define the sampling protocols.
INFORMATION ACCESS
The PPBio works on the principle that data collected on public lands, or by government employees, or using infrastructure provided by government funding are public property and must be made available in a timely fashion to stakeholders who have need of them.
Data availability in the PPBio is governed by an explicit Data Policy Document. It basically says that data must be put into a database within a few months of collection, but are not made public for a period of two years without the collectors permission. PPBio data are public and freely
available on the web.

Biological Collections
OBJECTIVE
Create the means to institute a policy, at
the national level, for the management
of biological collections that promotes
their maintenance, expansion, and
integration.
Biological Collections
Specific objectives:
• Support the maintenance and improvement of the
biological collections
• Support the training of specialists in systematics, taxonomy, curation, and information science applied to biodiversity;
• Support the organization, digitalization, management, and dissemination of information associated with biological collections through information technologies applied to biodiversity;
• Support the integration of collection databases in Amazonian and extra-Amazonian biodiversity information facilities
Biological Collections
General work lines:
Information management: - data and metadata bases - Web pages
Qualification: - taxonomic information - data cleaning - human resources
Infra-structure: - maintenance of facilities and equipment - preservation of biological specimens
Computerization:
Biological Collections
COMPUTERIZATION OF BIOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS:
1. Databasing 2. Online Publications 3. Online networking of collection databases
