E x citin g b ecau se of T o m m y W alker, th e s tu n t pilot, who b riefed us on “H ow to C rash an A ir­p lan e and L ive T h ru I t .” H is opening s ta te m e n t w as th a t he had s ta r te d in th e p lane cra sh in g b u siness q u ite by accid en t. None of us doubted it for a m om ent. I will not a tte m p t to re te ll h is m any, m a n y h a ir-ra is in g e x p e ri­en ces a s a c ra sh pilot w hile flying w ith th e F ly in g T ig e rs A ir C ircus, ju s t a f te r W orld W ar II. W ith sho u ld er h a rn e s s and c ra sh h elm et he cam e th ro u g h u n sc ra tc h e d and show ed us m ovies to p rove it. He ad v ised th a t if c ra s h or fo rced landing is in ev it­able, look for a good plot, s tick to it, point the nose betw een th e im m o v ab le o b jects and do not t ry to sa v e th e p lane. T he flight w as ab o u t two hours in le n g th an d w e w ere given in stru ctio n in H igh A ltitude flight ch aracteristics, plus v ery low a ltitu d e speed ru n along th e beach of S alton Sea a t 430 M PH, 100 fee t in d icated above sea level, to give us the tru e sensation of speed in re la tio n to th e ground.

T hen back to N orth Island fc r p ra c ­tice landings. A lot of the flight w as m ad e on a c tu a l in stru m en ts, w hich w e fe lt w as especially good tra in in g , an d since the GCA w as off a t th e tim e we m ade a ra d a r ap p ro ach . D on’t ask m e an y questions on th is, a ll I know is it's a good thing.

O ur ch a irm an , D ottie S anders, who is also th e S outhw estern Section F lig h t A ctivities C h airm an , announced the “ F ly -in " of th e S outhern A rea, to L ak e H avasu, on th e C olorado River, w hich w ill be held on S unday, M arch 11th. Q uite a few of the girls and th e ir h usbands and fam ilies and friends from th is ch a p te r expect to p a rtic ip a te . This is a reso rt on the A rizona side of th e r iv e r and is about 25 m iles south of N eedles. T here is fishing for those w ho are interested an d also a v ery nice p lace for lu n c h ­eon.
