Problems are an inevitable part of life and this world . We, at JSSP take every problem as a gift in our hands…. an opportunity to explore, innovate and create. Off we set ….looking for such problem areas in the school because charity starts at home ….. We talked to our teachers & junior students…….We feel that quality education can lead not only to solution of many problems but can also change life of many people.

c

What we feel….

……some students told us about their friends bullying them …We sorted out the matter through an open discussion.

c

What we feel….

…some were annoyed with their friends fighting during the break …students bringing flashy things to school …and using abusive language …We held a meeting with the student’s cabinet & safe club and arrived on a mutual consensus of ‘Duties’ during the break…..

c

What we feel….

But there was one very intelligent student , Akshit , who had a different kind of problem ….he had a problem in understanding one of the concepts in Science ‘direct proportionality between time period & length of pendulum’ …..

What we feel….

Investigating further into the problem , we came to know that it was not only Akshit’s problem ….it was the problem of his classmates too…not only this the other students in Std. VI – X were finding it difficult to understand the heavyweight concepts in Science …

What we feel….

…..one of our own classmate was struggling to understand the “ Double Helical Structure of DNA” …..we were now really concerned about it….

What we feel….

Science is the basis for reasoning & provides solution to problems…What if Science itself starts posing a problem ? This problem is really serious and grave as it would affect the lifelong learning of students …

c

What we feel….

..We thought to approach our Science Teacher, Coordinator & Principal ……. We fixed up a meeting with them…

c

What we imagine….

There was a lot of discussion & brainstorming ….and

then our Principal Ma’am gave us an idea… Why not create a science park ? The idea was brilliant but was it really possible ???

What we imagine….

…….we were clear about our goals but we did not

know how to do it ...... yet the most important thing was that we were determined to do it !!!

We will do it !!!

What we imagine….

…..We wanted to create a Science park where students develop the tendency to learn Science in a play –way method …..

What we imagine….

…..JSSP is blessed with an excellent infrastructure…wide lush green ground where this park could be created … but we needed the raw material for creating this park …..We started looking for alternatives …..

What we imagine….

Buy Science equipments from

a branded agency

Use the models

prepared during

Science Exhibition

Hiring a specialist for designing the park.

Create durable & robust science equipments using locally available

material

COST VERY HIGH !

NOT DURABLE !NOT AVAILABLE LOCALLY!

EXPLORING VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES

Again our Principal Ma’am showed us the way …. She had observed junk material present in a JUSCO Junkyard which was lying useless for past many years……. The junk could be used to create gadgets…if used meaningfully…

The Breakthrough Idea….

We surveyed the junkyard & consulted our Science teacher …Finally we were able to chalk out a plan for the same …… and that’s how we

moved on towards our story of change …

What we imagine….

THE STORY OF DESIGNING THE PARK

Visit to the junkyard for a survey

Technical planning meeting for architectural designing

Selecting & collecting junk as per design

Construction phase

RESOURCES LIMITED …. CREATIVITY UNLIMITED

Trying to find the right size of pipe

Looking for the best out of waste

Yeah ! We have got the right stuff!

Working with the blacksmith…

Setting up the equipments

Testing the equipments for working

Our teachers and staff also helped us..

Together we can …

Our teachers and staff also helped us..

Acupressure pathway designed at the entrance for healthy walk to the Science Park

Making the boundary by grouting & painting old grills

Our Science Park….

Gadgets in science park

Gadgets in the Science Park

Optical illusion

DNA double helix

Bird in a cage

Action & reaction blocks

Periodic table

Pulley & pulley blocks

World time clock

Variable length pendulum

Musical pipes

Inclined plane & friction

GLIMPSES OF A FEW GADGETS IN THE SCIENCE PARK

NEWTON’S COLOUR DISC IS BASED ON MIXING OF COLOURS

ILLUSION DISC EXPLAIN THE UNIQUE PROPERTY OF

HUMAN RETINA

DNA DOUBLE HELIX DNA DECIDES OUR BIOLOGICAL TRAITS WHICH ARE PASSED FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT

BIRD IN A CAGE EXPLAINS THE PERSISTENCE OF VISION

ACTION REACTION BALLS EXPLAIN NEWTON’S THIRD LAW

VARIABLE LENGTH PENDULUM

TELLS US ABOUT THE RELATION BETWEEN

LENGTH OF THE STRING & TIME PERIOD OF THE

PENDULUM

MUSICAL TUBES ARE BASED ON THE MUSICAL SOUND

PRODUCED BY CHANGING THE LENGTH

OF AIR COLUMN

PULLEY IS A SIMPLE MACHINE USED TO LIFT HEAVY SOLIDS WITH EASE

What did we save ?

• Market price of one readymade gadget – 15,000 • No. of gadgets in science park – 10• Total market price - 1,50,000 • Total amount of money spent in developing science park =

Welding charges + Cost of paint = 10,000• Amount of money saved – 1,50,000 - 10 ,000 = 1,40,000

No. of periods allotted for visiting science park –One/ month /classTotal number of classes visiting the science park – 22Usage in terms of periods per month – 22 student periods /month

How it helped the students ?

Teachers started using Science Park for the benefit of the students ….

• No. of periods allotted for visiting science park –One/ month /class• Total number of classes visiting the science park – 22• Usage in terms of periods per month – 22 student periods /month• Number of gadgets -10 • Number of concepts explained though the gadgets -13

Students engaged in learning by doing

Innovative concept of teaching Science in an informal way

An extensive coverage of topics in science including mechanics , sound , light , genetics etc.

Establishing linkage with other subjects like Geography, Mathematics etc

IMPACT ON THE SCHOOL

TANGIBLE & INTANGIBLE BENEFITS & IMPACT

Tangible Intangible

•Improved academic performance in Science

Science develops patience and perseverance in kids.

•Increased student engagement Science teaches kids about the world around them.

•Infrastructural growth at a minimal cost Science park gadgets promote conceptual learning rather than rote learning

•Increased parent satisfaction Happy students and motivated teachers

How the change has changed us…“ You must be the change you want to see in the world “ – Mahatma Gandhi

We at JSSP truly lived up to this saying !!

Thank you

The Road Not Takenby: Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that passing there

Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back. Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.
