IN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSEIN SUSPENSE

The main focus of my project ‘In Suspense” is the idea of suspension and how things are held up, put together and made. This topic came about because of my father and how he looks at buildings and structures. Because of his profession as an engineer he sees the beauty of how things are constructed. I wanted to take his fascinated view at looking at buildings and turn them into something that fascinated me. As a result I have merged both materials commonly found in both our areas of fascination, wood and steel, commonly found in construction, and silk commonly found in high-end garments.

I wanted to set the theme of the collection in a city that we had both never been to, so it could be looked at with new interest. I chose New York city, as it is a city that I have always wanted to visit, as it renown for their fashion and culture as well as their landmarks. Two buildings that I was immediately attracted to was the Chrysler building, and its art deco styling and the Brooklyn Bridge with its numerous suspension wires.

I took both these aspects of the two buildings and interpreted them in a way I feel my dad would, but translated that into cloth-ing that I enjoy. I took advantage of his knowledge in construction and how things work and incorporated that into the collection via suspension and the use of industrial materials.
