Due to Japan’s geography, fish and rice were main

Island nation meant people had to turn to

the sea for food.

Mountainous terrain meant little land for

…helped the Japanese to grow rice on the sides of mountains.

Harvest Time

It would be hard to farm and fish during the winter

months however…

The Japanese learned to pack the fish in rice to preserve it through the winter months.
