Outstanding Judgement (Leadership and Management)

Leaders and governors focus on consistently improving outcomes for all

pupils, but especially for disadvantaged pupils. They are uncompromising

in their ambition.

The school’s actions have secured substantial improvement in progress for

disadvantaged pupils. Progress is rising across the curriculum, including in

English and mathematics.

Outcomes – Disadvantaged pupils

190 Inspectors should talk to leaders about the quality of teaching, behaviour and the design and delivery of the curriculum to examine why there may be underperformance for some pupils. Where there is an identifiable shortfall in progress or attainment of disadvantaged children or in wider evidence, inspectors should consider:

• the adequacy of the core provision and approaches that have an impact on all children

• identified needs of the child, e.g. SEND, and how these are met, and

• any additional provision that may appropriately be made on the basis of family

economic or social disadvantage.

Your Pupil Premium Strategy

What strategies are governors

using to ensure school leaders are

• Creating a culture of high expectation and aspiration for disadvantaged learners

• Providing access to high quality core provision

• Identifying and tackling barriers

that need to be addressed?

Discussion 1

Discussion 2

What governor activities could inform the annual review of your pupil premium strategy and its impact?

• Joining learning walks and work scrutiny

• Review of data – performance, attendance, engagement

• Talking with pupils/staff

Key Questions for Governors

National Careers Strategy Update for GovernorsMay 2018

Informed by ‘Good Career Guidance’ benchmarks (Gatsby, 2014)

1.A stable careers programme

2.Learning from career and labour market information

3.Addressing the needs of each pupil

4.Linking curriculum learning to careers

5.Encounters with employers and employees

6.Experiences of workplaces

7.Encounters with further and higher education

8.Personal guidance

Key Actions for Schools/Colleges

Statutory guidance for schools(DfE, January 2018)

• Legal requirements (‘must’) and

detailed advice (‘should’) on all 8

Gatsby benchmarks

• Covers the duties to secure access to

independent careers guidance and

to provide access for providers of

technical education and

apprenticeships (inc sample policy)

• Careers Leader – name and contact

details on school’s website by September 2018

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/careers-

guidance-provision-for-young-people-in-schools

What is the governing body expected to do?

• provide clear advice to the headteacher on which to base a strategy for careers which meets the legal requirements and is in line with the Gatsby benchmarks and the statutory guidance

• ensure arrangements are in place to allow a range of education and training providers access to all pupils in years 8-13, and that a policy statement setting out these arrangements is published

(Technical and Further Education Act 2017-

effective from January 2018)

GDPR Reminders

• Your schools all need to be actively making plans to be complaint with the new regulations by May half term, or as soon as possible afterwards. Governors should be monitoring this implementation.

• Governors should be given school email addresses for electronic discussion of school issues.

• Governors should review what they have stored at home on their computers, etc.

GDPR Reminders

The Governor Database has been upgraded ready for September, with sections for:

• Meeting Calendar

• Documents

• Governor Details

No running themes this year

Standards seem to be higher, and a good clerk is critical to this.

Governor induction is patchy with some excellent examples, but some schools still have it on their “do next year” list.

Governor monitoring is slowly becoming more systematic, but there is still confusion about what, why, how, how often?

Some schools with local clerks still make little provision for:

• Performance management

• Training

Strategic leadership is weaker than

accountability

LA Governors

• We have now finished the migration from the old political appointees to the new nomination system;

• Some LA Governors appointed under the new system will be coming to the end of their term of office.

• If you need a NEW LA Governor, use the application system as now.

• If your LA Governor is happy to be re-nominated, we have already performed due diligence, so please contact Governor Support and we will streamline the re-appointment system.

Team Updates

Governor Network Meetings

From September, we will run network meetings twice a year rather than three times per year.

• Autumn – November, in the second half of the autumn term

• Spring/Summer – May/June, before your final GB meeting of the year.

• Both sets of meetings will have a single booking rather than the separate workshop booking.

• Timings will be from 5:30 to 8 pm, with a 15 minute refreshment break.

• Every meeting will still have at least one workshop and plenty of discussion

The Strategic Plan for SEND Education Provision -update

• Subject to democratic process public consultation will take place in May and June 2018

• Specific meetings in local areas for head teachers

• Specific meetings for identified groups

• Parent/carer meetings in all localities

• Children/young people focus groups

• Consultation will be at

https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/current-consultations
