Outstanding Judgement (Leadership and Management)

Leaders and governors focus on consistently improving outcomes for all

pupils, but especially for disadvantaged pupils. They are uncompromising

in their ambition.

The school’s actions have secured substantial improvement in progress for

disadvantaged pupils. Progress is rising across the curriculum, including in

English and mathematics.

Outcomes – Disadvantaged pupils

190 Inspectors should talk to leaders about the quality of teaching, behaviour and the design and delivery of the curriculum to examine why there may be underperformance for some pupils. Where there is an identifiable shortfall in progress or attainment of disadvantaged children or in wider evidence, inspectors should consider:

• the adequacy of the core provision and approaches that have an impact on all children

• identified needs of the child, e.g. SEND, and how these are met, and

• any additional provision that may appropriately be made on the basis of family

economic or social disadvantage.

GDPR Reminders

• Your schools all need to be actively making plans to be complaint with the new regulations by May half term, or as soon as possible afterwards. Governors should be monitoring this implementation.

• Governors should be given school email addresses for electronic discussion of school issues.

• Governors should review what they have stored at home on their computers, etc.

No running themes this year

Standards seem to be higher, and a good clerk is critical to this.

Governor induction is patchy with some excellent examples, but some schools still have it on their “do next year” list.

Governor monitoring is slowly becoming more systematic, but there is still confusion about what, why, how, how often?

Some schools with local clerks still make little provision for:

• Performance management

• Training

Strategic leadership is weaker than

accountability

LA Governors

• We have now finished the migration from the old political appointees to the new nomination system;

• Some LA Governors appointed under the new system will be coming to the end of their term of office.

• If you need a NEW LA Governor, use the application system as now.

• If your LA Governor is happy to be re-nominated, we have already performed due diligence, so please contact Governor Support and we will streamline the re-appointment system.

Team Updates

Governor Network Meetings

From September, we will run network meetings twice a year rather than three times per year.

• Autumn – November, in the second half of the autumn term

• Spring/Summer – May/June, before your final GB meeting of the year.

• Both sets of meetings will have a single booking rather than the separate workshop booking.

• Timings will be from 5:30 to 8 pm, with a 15 minute refreshment break.

• Every meeting will still have at least one workshop and plenty of discussion
