What is NiDA ?

• National Information Communications Technology Development Authority (NiDA) is a government agency responsible for managing the development of the information technology industry in Cambodia. Among the agency's projects are the computerization of government function and training of internet personnel. NiDA is located in Phnom Penh.

History

NiDA was established in 23th August 2000 to promote ICT in Cambodia country.

It is tasked to formulate ICT policy for a short, medium and long term development.

It is supported by the office of Council of Minister and chaired by the prime minister.

NiDA had created one software call Khmer Unicode that difference from the Limon.

Khmer Unicode: User Khmer fonts such as: Khmer OS, Khmer OS Bokor, Khmer OS

Battambang, Khmer OS Siemreap,…etc Type as Khmer writing features (alphabet before vowel happened) Easy to put the small alphabet (just type J keypad) Use it in several technology such as: E-mail, Web browser, Open office,

• Khmer Unicode is a Khmer software that is so useful in several utilizations.

• In search engine we type Khmer Unicode so all related websites are shown in Khmer webpage.

• We can type Khmer language in E-mail: Gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, Chatting and Microsoft Office, Open Office

• In Khmer website they use Khmer Unicode to use many purpose.

• In some kind of mobile use Khmer Unicode Technology to see all instruction programs mobiles.

• In Khmer dictionary software use Khmer Unicode fonts.• NiDA established a Khmer web browser called “Mekala” and

Khmer E-mail Application called “Moyura”.• NiDA also created KhmerOS such as: Windows, OpenSuSE

• Khmer Unicode is official declared to use general in various institutes, Companies, Universities, Ministries, organizations.

• Especially in some website designer, they use Khmer Unicode to design webpage and post it on Internet.

• Some Organizations use Khmer web browser Mekala and email application Moyura to support Khmer achievements.

• Cambodian Writers type Khmer Unicode to write novels.

Unpopular

• Almost of Universities, Companies, Institutes didn’t use Mekala and Moyura but instead of that they use Firefox, Internet Explorer 8, Opera

• Open office is not use widely for Cambodian people. they use Microsoft office and Khmer Unicode.

• For Khmer Operating System Cambodian people is not use it to work in Companies, Universities, and another places.

Objective of NiDA

• Formulate IT promotion and development policy for the short, medium and long term.

• In charge of IT policy implementation to ensure maximum economic growth.

• Monitor and audit all IT related projects in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

• NiDA is both a regulator and a promoter. This is not a contradictory roles; but rather an integrated approach to ensure that the regulatory role is aligned with the development objectives.

Objective of NiDA

• NiDA's vision is the Prime minister's vision as stated in the Asian Wall Street Journal on July 31, 1999.

• "Cambodia would like to fully reclaim its destiny, to be a real partner in regional and global affairs and be well on its way to becoming a truly free nation free from want and poverty above all else."

• Our mission is to bring the government closer to the people and vice versa; so that essential services can be provided

Objective of NiDA

• We plan to achieve our vision through computerization and utilization of current technology.

• Computerization of government services will remove "rural" barriers from the development equation. Thus, our vision of becoming a real partner in regional and global affairs, a truly free nation, free from want and poverty can be affectively achieved.

• NiDA will work closely with donor countries, government agencies, industries and community to achieve this vision

Disadvantages

• All source code of software are distributed from the other country and we just translated it to Khmer Language ( Open office is from source code of Microsoft office, Mekala is Mozilla Firefox, Moyura is thunderbird…)

• Mostly of Cambodian people is not use widely of KhmerOS or Khmer Software that NiDA tried to established and published

• NiDA is still keep supplying from partners.
