RedDog a talefull of heart

Actor Josh Lucas and the real star of the show, Koko the dog, in a scene from Red Dog

OUTSIDE the mining town ofDampier in Western Australiasits a bronze statue of a local herowho became a legend: a kelpie cal-led Red Dog.

Kriv Stenders’ latest film is abroad comedy that brings to lifethe folktale of Red Dog, whobrought Dampier together whenit was newly established in the1970s. It’s told in a series of flash-backs to a young truck driver(Luke Ford) who stops in at thelocal pub, where Red Dog is on hislast legs.

Publican Jack (Noah Taylor)reminisces about how he foundthe wandering kelpie, who be-came renowned for his putrid

farts, ability to hitchhike andrun-ins with the villainousRed Cat. The real warmth ofthe movie is found through theAmerican wanderer John (JoshLucas), who becomes Red Dog’strue master.

John and Red Dog’s friendshipis like an absurd love story, butone that’s more heartfelt thanJohn’s relationship with Nancy(Rachael Taylor).

A short sequence featuringhome videos of Red Dog, Nancyand John is one part of this truestory that actually feels real, among all the loud jokes andcharacters. This is thanks in nosmall part to the silent star of the

film, Koko the dog, who is re-markably expressive and has apersonality that shines through.

Also featured in small cameosare Bill Hunter, in one of his finalfilm roles, as well as Oscar-nominated New Zealand actressKeisha Castle-Hughes.

Red Dog is a very bright andcolourful film, which matches theoverall bubbly tone of the story.

If you’re keen to watch some-thing with a lot of depth, save RedDog for another time.

But it’s good, clean family funfor kids who will like the gags andparents who will feel nostalgic.

Red Dog is released in cinemas on

August 4.
