Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message
If you missed out on our March lunch program you missed a very interesting look at a way of thinking about
economics. Roger Arnold talked about the four dominant issues that drive human interaction in the world today; put
together, they constitute the global metanarrative. They are energy, technology, demographics and debt. Although
each issue is distinct and the study of them can be esoteric, each has general themes, and the way they interact is
critically important for all investors to become aware.
Summary: What’s good for America is good for the rest of the world. A fairly optimistic look at the economy
going forward.
I saw a few new faces at media training hosted by Ben Lewis. You can get a copy of the tips for working with the
media by signing onto OneFPA.org and searching for PR resources or attending one of our future media training
session usually held in March.
April gives us a small break from lunch meetings as tax season closes mid-month with a post-tax day Happy Hour
with CE with Gary Altman of Altman and Associates at Maggiano’s in Chevy Chase from 5 ‘til 7ish pm. You can
register here.
Baseball season is upon us and both the Orioles and Nationals look like they will be playoff caliber squads. I will be
attending my 18th straight opening day game at Camden Yards. You can’t have a baseball start without thinking about
the warmer weather and longer days which allow for rounds of golf. Please join us for our annual Charity Golf Outing
that benefits charities such as the Foundation for Financial Planning and area scholarships for CFP programs. This
year’s golf outing will be held once again at Westfield’s Golf Club in Clifton on May 3rd 2017. You can register here.
Sponsorships and 4-somes are going fast. Get the early bird rate before April 1st!

The June symposium is June 5th at the Dulles Hyatt. “Navigating Change in The Age of Uncertainty” will be our
theme!
This year’s Spring Symposium will be divided into 2 sections: Helping Your Clients Navigate Change
Successfully and will feature a keynote presentation by Wade Pfau, PhD, CFA Professor of Retirement Income at the
American College and Director of Retirement Research at McLean Asset Management. We’ll then put the focus on
you as we explore Navigating Change in Your Own Practice featuring Bob Veres speaking about where the
profession is going and where it needs to go. We’ll have the usual sessions on technical topics and hopefully give
you tools that will help you navigate 2017 and beyond! You can find out about the program and register here.
Don’t forget to Do One Thing! Our Chapter Committees always need your help and involvement! Please let us know
which area you would like to offer your assistance!
I look forward to seeing you soon at our upcoming events.
Best Regards,
Bryan Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF®

June 5th Spring Symposium – Dulles Hyatt, Herndon, VA
Our Programs Committee has an exciting June Symposium planned! Our theme is “Navigating Change in the
Face of Uncertainty” and we are going to look at it from two viewpoints: Helping you navigate change and
uncertainty in your business and Helping you advise clients on how to manage change and uncertainty.
We will kick the day off with Wade Pfau – sponsored by Fairway (as almost a follow on from our Winter
Symposium). He will be talking about addressing the “uncertainty” of coming up short in retirement by taking
a practical look at the place of reverse mortgages in our future planning.
We’ll continue the morning with a well-known speaker, sponsored by Schwab- Victor Gaxiola with Hearsay
Social, talking about being an advisor in the digital age. We’ll continue the afternoon with Catalyst and
American Century providing investment-related updates and ideas as well as a neat session sponsored by Legg
Mason on aging and its impact on housing for our clients.
Finally, we’ll wrap up a great day with Bob Veres speaking about the future of advice. If you haven’t gotten
his book, you might want to. In short, you’ll be better prepared to navigate change in the future in your practice
and with your clients.
There will NOT be Ethics at this session, we’ll do that later in the Fall for non-early morning people. At lunch
we will be honoring Elissa Buie for her Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Kathleen Sindell for her
Leadership Award, and as always, there will be a happy hour to give us a chance to connect and unwind. We
expect CEs for most of our sessions and think it will be well-worth a day out of your schedule.
Be sure to mark your calendar for our next Happy Hour with CE on July 12 at Bazin’s in Vienna, VA. More to
come as we line up a great speaker to keep those CEs coming at you!

Launching the Encore Group, a new FPA NCA Community
A growing number of newer FPA NCA members are just starting out in our profession as career changers. Like
many of our clients, they are launching second careers – taking the Certified Financial Planner coursework either
online or through a local certification program. This new group will encourage networking between established
planners and new entrants to the field, and will offer opportunities for idea sharing and camaraderie for newly
credentialed planners who don’t quite fit the NexGen mold.
If you are interested in joining the group, please let Susan Chesson know: schesson@focus-wealth.com
NEXGEN: Big Focus on getting this survey filled out:
NexGen! Please take 5-7 minutes to fill out the NexGen Volunteer and Networking Opportunities survey. This is
your chance to volunteer for next year’s committees, and give your input on what we should be doing to better
serve you needs and opinions!

media training program, conducted by FPA Director of Public Relations Ben Lewis, covers the essentials in
working with journalists. Not only is media training mandatory for all CFP® members who want to receive FPA
media queries, but the information will enable you to effectively approach media relations within your own
business! Learn more and register today at
