The placement machine FLX2011-MKL is a
multifunctional production cell for the
manufacture of membrane keypads and
flexible printed circuits. The machine
dispenses adhesives and solder paste and
mounts SMD components, LEDs and
switches, eg. metal domes.
The integrated vacuum table provides
space for widescreen substrates. Smaller
substrates can be clustered and processed
as one.
Assembly machines of the FLX2011 series
are designed for flexible, high quality
production and ease of use. These
machines are highly developed, based on
on the experience from more than 1,000
installations worldwide.
LEDs and other SMT components are placed quickly
and accurately. An integrated optical measurement
system checks every component before assembling.
Snap disks (metal domes) can also be placed by the
FLX2011-MKL. Various feeder types are availble for
metal domes supplied in tape or sticks.
Two different dispensing valves can be integrated.
This allows the application of two different media (eg,
glue and conductive adhesive) in one operation.

One machine for all flex circuit applications
Multiple individual circuits can be clustered and
processed as one.
FLX2011-MKL also places switching elements such as
metal domes.
The production cell FLX2011-MKL can
manufacture membrane keypads or
completely assemble flexible printed circuit
boards.

The work area is much bigger than on
standard pick and place machines and
covered by a vacuum table. Integrated
calibration structures assure the flatness of
the table.
Feeding systems are available for all sorts of
SMT components and LEDs, whether they
are supplied in tape, stick or tray. Other
feeder variants are designed to load metal
dome switches or labels for product
identification.
Product specific carriers are common use
for the manufacture of double sided flex
circuits. Such carriers are processed with
the foil, even in the reflow process.
LED assembly on flex circuits requires conductive
adhesives (green) and a second glue (black) assuring
the mechanical strength. The two adhesives are
dispensed and the LED is placed in one operation.
Carriers with integrated vacuum fixation enable the
assembly of double sided flexible circuits.

Single or double head dispensing system
Up to two dispensing modules are possible to combine with the mounting
head. The Dispensing valve type is chosen according to the application.
FLX2011 MKL assembly systems can be
equipped with one or two liquid
dispensing systems in combination with
the pick and place head. In one sequence
of operation thus two different media can
be dispensed and all SMD components can
be placed.
The dispenser types are chosen depending
on the application. The choices are, for
example, time pressure, archimedean
screw, jet and piezo-flow dispenser.
The coordinates for dispensing are
calculated directly from the mounting
positions and the dimensions of the SMD
components. Therefore, no additional
programming effort is required. The
sequence of dispensing and placement
operations is selectable.
Precise placement
The integrated vision system detects and
measures reference marks on the foils and
corrects any offset automatically. All FLX
assembly machines are equipped with the
Cyberoptics laser centering system. This
unique device is mounted directly on the
placement head. The measurement of
components happens "on the fly" and thus
avoids unnecessary movement to distant
camera systems. In addition, the
measurement system also detects missing
components and chip stand automatically.
Models of type FLX-V are additionally
equipped with the world's best vision
system COGNEX SMD4. It's image
processing technology uses state of the art
algorithms and reliably detects and
inspects fine pitch QFP, BGA and micro BGA
or components with specific contours.
Thanks to a unique "On-The-Fly" learning
function new component types can be
programmed within seconds.
Top-down vision for the automatic detection of
reference marks for position and distortion correction.
High throughput: The Cyberoptics laser measurement
system for SMD components and LEDs.
High precision: The reliable SMD4 Cognex vision
measures components their leads completely before
assembly.

Easy operation and programming
The user interface of FLX: virtual and easy to
understand.
The operation of the FLX2011 is very user
friendly. All information is displayed
graphically. Complex assembly data are
presented as a virtual board. Components
are shown in realistic form and size.
The CAD interface directly converts data
from layout of programs into assembly
programs. Over 300 component shapes are
already prepared and defined. With the
integrated drawing program new
components and special designs can easily
be created.
Assembly program modifications are
possible by mouse click, for example,
rotation, mirroring, moving and deleting
individual components. Layouts can be
copied and clustered.
The unique "virtual view" feature allows the
examination and correction of a program
without having to use a real component.
Therefore, already the first board of a series
will be properly manufactured.
The integrated remote control system
enables to connect the machine with a
hotline service via internet. Thus, diagnosis
and assistance of specialists is available
around the world without delay.
For dispensing, the component coordinates will be
used to calculate the dispensing dots. Therefore, no
additional programming is required.
The unique "virtual view" feature overlays the
assembly program with the live image of the PCB.
New component types are drawn quickly with the
built-in "wizard".

Feeders for all kind of components
For SMD components such as LEDs tape feeders in all
standard widths are available. These feeders can be
easily set up and can be refilled directly on the
machine.
FLX assembly machines can also place leaded LEDs.

Metal domes are available in tape&reel and punched
tapes for which Essemtec has developed highly
accurate and reliable feeders.
Metal domes supplied in sticks (Nicomatic) are fed
with a special stick feeder. These feeders accept a large
variety of stick dimensions.
The flexibility of FLX2011-MKL assembly
system allows the use of various feeding
systems.
For LEDs and other SMT components a full
range of standard tape or stick feeders is
available. For short strips of tape - common
in prototyping - a universal and adjustable
tape strip feeder system can be used.
Snap disks (metal domes) can be supplied
in sticks (e.g. Nicomatic), tape&reel or
punched tapes.
Intelligent tape and stick feeders are
automatically recognized by the pick and
place system as soon as they are installed.
Therefore, the feeder status is detected
(ready, refill, stop) and indicated by means
of colored light on the feeder and also
directly in the machine software.
Feeders can be programmed offline or
online, the fastest and safest directly with a
barcode reader.
