Over one hundred years ago, an epidemic broke out in the Yanshui area, and many people died. So, they carried a statue of Guan-gong around the streets of Yanshuei and let off firecrackers at the same time. Eventually, the plague came to an end and the town, which was then the fourth most important harbor in Taiwan, was finally able to restart its business activities.

Nowadays, the firecracker-parade, with folk performances, a food fair featuring local snacks, and other activities all have become important festival themes on the day of the Lantern Festival in Yanshuei.
The fantastic night view of hundreds of thousands of firecrackers being shot into the sky has attracted numerous people to the Lantern Festival. A full-faced motorcycle helmet and thick fireproof clothing are needed if you want towatch up close the parade and enjoy the excitement, almost like a gun battle.

Wumiao was built in 1668, during the late Ming Dynasty of China. There are a lot of ancient inscriptions that can be seen all around the temple. Probably the first such marking you will see is the pillar couplets found on both sides of the gate. These ancient couplets, as well as sign slips on a giant beam in front of the old statue of the temple god, were produced at the time the temple was founded.

Near the Yanshuei bus stop you will find the most impressive historical landmark of the town, called the Octagonal Hall. It is the most wellpreserved wooden architecture in the town; a two-story building built with Fujhou fir and lime. The most interesting aspect of this building is the octagonal ridge of the roof.
