Geography Awareness Week
Geography Awareness Week
(GAW) has been celebrated
internationally in the third week of
November since 1987. The week of
activities culminates in the
recognition of Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) Day
which is a grassroots event that
formalizes the practice of GIS. On
this day, geospatial users and vendors
open their doors to schools,
businesses, and the general public to
showcase real-world applications of
this important technology and how it
can be used for decision-making and
problem solving.
The Land Information Council of
Jamaica/National Spatial Data
Management Division and
stakeholders have been celebrating
GAW and GIS Day for the past 14
years with technical seminars,
expositions and business executive
forums.
The theme for this year’s GAW
celebration is ‘Geospatial
Technologies: Advancing Public
Health Services’.
