Men versus women: BMO survey reveals the difference between their entrepreneurial spirits
Gratitude can go a long way toward build-ing positive working relationships, and ex-ecutives might have room for improvement in this area, suggests new research by Ac-countemps. Among businesses of all sizes, 85 per cent of chief fi nancial offi cers (CFOs) surveyed said they feel they do an adequate job of recognizing their employees. Howev-er, 41 per cent of offi ce workers interviewed in a separate survey said they don’t receive enough thanks for doing a great job.
Looking at regional differences, offi ce workers from Quebec (70 per cent) topped the list of respondents who reported receiv-ing enough appreciation from their manager. The survey also revealed that in the United States, workers (76 per cent) feel more appre-ciated than their Canadian colleagues and a majority of executives(65 per cent) reported thanking their employees often enough.
“Everyone wants to feel like their on-the-job contributions are recognized and valued,” said Greg Scileppi, president of Robert Half, Inter-national Staffi ng Operations. “Although com-pensation is important, professionals also want to know that their work makes a difference.”
Accountemps offers fi ve tips for managers on effectively recognizing employees:
GIVE TIMELY PRAISE When employees go above and beyond
the call of duty, don’t wait to acknowledge it. The sooner you recognize the achieve-ment, the greater the impact your action will have.
MAKE IT COUNT Cash isn’t the only reward that carries
weight. Vacation days, movie tickets and even handwritten cards can mean just as
much. Ask employees what type of ac-knowledgement they fi nd most satisfying to ensure your recognition program re-mains relevant to them.
SCALE RECOGNITION TO FIT THE ACHIEVEMENT
A heartfelt “thank you” may be enough for smaller accomplishments, but truly outstand-ing performance should be acknowledged more ceremoniously.
TAKE NOTE OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Track employee achievements so you can highlight them during feedback sessions and performance reviews.
FOSTER A CULTURE OF RECOGNITION
Praise from colleagues is often as meaning-ful as a nod from a manager. So be sure to support a corporate culture that encourages members of your team to commend each oth-er openly for a job well done.
ASK FOR THEIR OPINION
Consider surveying employees if your company does not currently do so. Get-ting feedback in this way can help to en-sure employers and their staff are in sync on recognition efforts and also could open the door for a better organizational com-munication.
The surveys were developed by Accoun-temps and was conducted by an independent research fi rm and are based on telephone in-terviews with more than 260 CFOs and online interviews with more than 280 offi ce employ-ees across Canada. ●

More thanks, pleaseSurvey: Canadian employees would like more appreciation
BMO Bank of Montreal recently released a study that found clear differences in the motivations and characteristics of men and women business owners, and how they got where they are.
The survey, conducted by Pollara, found that male business owners are more likely than their female counterparts to have got-ten into their role by starting their own busi-ness (65 per cent vs. 56 per cent), according to the survey of 500 Canadian business own-ers. Women, on the other hand, are more likely than men to have become business
owners through a promotion (13 per cent for women vs. 7 per cent for men) or taking over the family business (21 per cent vs. 15 per cent, respectively).
There were also marked differences when it came to the key factors for starting a business:
“The survey fi ndings paint an interesting picture of the differences between male and female business owners in Canada,” said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, Com-mercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. “It’s encouraging to see that both men and woman are highly driven by a passion for their busi-
ness – which is key to successfully running an organization or business.”
“Women seem to be drawn to the challenge more than men. It’s clearly having an impact, with more women opting for self-employment, according to the latest data,” said Murphy.
There were also pronounced differences in the sectors where people operate. Men are more likely to be running businesses in the manufacturing (11 per cent vs. 5 per cent), construction (11 per cent vs. 6 per cent), or automotive (6 per cent vs. 1 per cent) sectors, whereas women are more likely to be in retail
(14 per cent vs. 7 per cent) or hospitality (9 per cent vs. 4 per cent).
According to BMO Economics, these sec-tors combined have a signifi cant impact on the Canadian economy. For example, the manufacturing sector represents more than 10 per cent of Canada’s GDP, with construction at approximately 7 per cent, retail more than 5 per cent, food & accommodation at 2 per cent and transportation equipment at 1.5 per cent.
Results cited above come from a telephone survey conducted by Pollara with a random sample of 500 Canadian business owners. ●

Helping young people fi nd jobs
Ontario’s new Youth Employment Fund will help more young people fi nd jobs.
Starting this September, the fund will help employers offer four-to six-month job and train-ing placements for young people seeking work.
Premier Kathleen Wynne unveiled new details about the Youth Employment Fund at Operation Springboard in Scarborough recently. Ontario will provide up to $7,800 to cover a range of supports and services for each eligible young worker under the fund. That includes up to $6,800 to help employers cover wages and training costs, and up to $1,000 to help young workers pay for job-related costs like tools and transportation to work.
“We are committed to connecting young people with meaningful job placements,” said Wynne. “This will equip them with the valuable experience and skills they need to get a fi rm footing in the job market. It will also help employers fi nd the young workers they need to prosper and grow.”
The Ontario government announced the fund in the 2013 Budget as part of the new Youth Jobs Strategy. The strategy will help more young people fi nd jobs or start their own businesses, and ensure that employ-ers can fi nd the skilled workers they need to grow their businesses.
“I’m pleased we are going to be able to provide essential work experience – in many
cases for the fi rst time – to so many deserv-ing young people,” said Minister of Train-ing, Colleges and Universities Brad Duguid. “Helping youth succeed in a 21st century economy is part of our government’s plan to build a fair and prosperous Ontario.”
Helping young people fi nd jobs is part of the Ontario government’s plan to strengthen the economy and build a fair and prosperous society.
“Ontario’s economy is stronger when ev-eryone has the opportunity to be gainfully em-ployed,” said Minister of Economic Develop-ment, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “By connecting young people of all abilities and backgrounds with relevant work experience, we’ll prepare them to join the workforce and contribute to the province’s economic success.”
QUICK FACTS• Ontario is investing $195 million over two
years in the Youth Employment Fund.• Businesses and eligible youth aged 15 to
29 will be able to access the fund through Employment Ontario or through their local employment service providers.
• Last year, 35 per cent of Employment On-tario clients were youth. Sixty-seven per cent of those clients found employment and 14 per cent went on to further training or education. ●
