Roofing repairs

Testimonial:

“It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies

It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.”

decided to advertise in ‘East

was reasonable and it seemed

like a good publication. Little

did I know just how much of

when I heard that there

was a no brainer to advertise in that one too!”

Baileys Cheesecake

Recipe by Chef Dean Samsudin

at the Brambletye Hotel

Ingredients 100g (3 ½ oz) butter, melted

240g (8 ½ oz) crushed digestives

600g (1lb 5oz) cream cheese

25ml (1 fl oz) Baileys

100g (3 1/2oz) icing sugar

300ml (10 ½ fl oz double cream)

¼ tsp cocoa powder

Method1. To make the base, melt butter and mix with crushed digestives. Line a

8/9”spring cake tin with the biscuits (or we use individual moulds about 3” round at the Brambletye).

2. Next, whisk the cream cheese, baileys and icing sugar together to blend.

3. Separately, and this is important, whisk the double cream to soft peaks, then gently fold into the cream cheese and baileys mix. Finish with ¼ tsp cocoa powder to give a nice colour.

4. Top your biscuit base with the mixture, then chill for 1-2 hours.

5. Optional: garnish with strawberry, mint and a chocolate sauce for a dessert the whole family will enjoy.

A good way of using up any Baileys left over from

Christmas, this simple recipe will go down well.

History Notes: Residents who left a mark on our town

Gilbert D’Aquila: The Man Who Laid the Foundations of Our Town

To start this series on local residents who left their mark on the town, I am going to talk about the man who began it all. Gilbert D’Aquila was the grandson of Engeloulf de l’Aigle who came over from France in 1066 with William of Normandy. D’Aquila and l’Aigle are variations of the same name meaning “eagle”. This could have referred to an emblem on their coat of arms or indicated they were particularly sharp-eyed.

William brought with him hundreds of landowners and nobility from Normandy. They supplied him with money, ships, horses and men. After defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings on October 14th 1066, William swept through Sussex laying waste to the county on his way to London where he was crowned. To reward his followers and to ensure that his route to France was secure in case the necessity for reinforcements should be needed in the early days, William gave them lands in Sussex. He divided the county from south to north into six strips called “rapes”. They were Chichester, Arundel, Bramber, Lewes, Pevensey and Hastings. Every rape contained a harbour or major river and a castle was subsequently built in each one. East Grinstead fell into the Rape of

Pevensey.

Page 18: East Grinstead Living January Edition

Initially, it was awarded to Robert, Earl of Mortain, William’s half brother. However, after Robert’s death his son, William, rebelled against Henry I. He was dispossessed of his lands and they were given to Gilbert D’Aquila in the very early C12th.

Gilbert seems to have taken a serious interest in his holdings. He built well known Michelham Priory and the church of All Saints in the nearby village of Laughton. At about the same time Gilbert decided to build a new town on the ridge near the church of St Swithun’s in the north of his estates.

In the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086 to establish the extent and value of his kingdom, East Grinstead is only a “hundred”. This was a Saxon division of land and it contained several manors and ”una ferraria” or iron-working site. There was no actual settlement named East Grinstead.

From St. Swithun’s name it can be reasonably inferred that it was built soon after 999. The real Saint Swithun was Bishop of Winchester. At that time, important people would be buried inside the church. The more important, the nearest the altar. Lesser mortals were buried outside. St Swithun was a very humble man and requested to be buried in the churchyard. However, he was buried near the altar as his congregation thought befitted a man of his standing. For forty days and nights the heavens opened and tremendous storms raged around the town. They did not stop until St. Swithun was reburied outside as he had wished. This miracle would have made a powerful impression on everyone and the story soon spread all over England, so who better to have your church dedicated at that time than him.

St. Swithun’s would have served as a focal point for the area for many years before Gilbert arrived. Everyone from the surrounding manors would have worshipped at the church. They would have brought their local disputes to the moot courts held there, sold their produce at the informal gatherings and, no doubt, exchanged gossip. This, together with the church being sited on a sandstone

ridge running west to east, made it an obvious choice for a settlement (last to become East Grinstead).

It was carefully laid out on both sides of a broad street, which allowed space for markets, fairs and the passage of sheep and cattle. The houses or “burgages” were a standard thirty three feet wide, with long gardens called “portlands” running for some 300 yards behind them. The houses were timber framed, infilled with wattle and daub and probably thatched. Inside was one large open space in which the whole family would live. In the centre of the earth floor, a fire would burn to provide heat and a means of cooking. The smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. Later a loft might be built over part of the area to provide a sleeping chamber for the master and mistress. Many of the residents would be tradesmen and would carry on their business at the front of the building. Again, a refinement would be to partition off a small section to devote to their trade. They could be carpenters or work in one of the leather trades, making shoes or saddles and harnesses for horses.

On the land behind the dwelling a variety of fruit and vegetables were grown to provide for the family. Peas and beans were staples in their diet. Cabbages, onions swedes would give variety. Apple and cherry trees would be planted. Chickens provided eggs and meat. Many would keep a pig which was killed and salted in the Autumn. Beehives made honey. The water supply was not always pure so most people, including children, drank small beer, brewed from the locally grown barley. This would be bartered for from the local farmers in return for some vegetables or honey.

The reasons for Gilbert to build a town will never be known. Perhaps he was familiar with the area as it was about half way between London and the coast and would provide him and other travellers with a convenient resting place. Whatever his reasons the past and present residents of the town are grateful that he laid the foundations of this pleasant market town.

Bill starts, “My mum was the most wonderful lady (he admits everyone says this but it’s true). As you can tell from the book she used to collect sayings: “Never be afraid to try anything. The worse thing that can happen is that you’re back where you started” (and another), “Never be afraid to ask anyone anything, the worst they can say is: b**ger off”, that’s it. So I’ve never been afraid of trying anything’. Thus his foray into the writing world…

His daughter nagged him for years to write his life story, ‘Before you can’t remember anymore,’ she said - though I can’t imagine that happening. At nearly 70 Bill’s memory’s as keen as the eyes of an eagle and his mind is as full of energy, ‘ age is a state of mind… your body might get a bit more tired but your brain shouldn’t’, he said.

Submitting a 5000 word entry to the Alan Titchmarsh writing competition he came second out of just over a 1000 entries. Approached by a publisher, he signed a 3 book deal.

The second book, Billy Brown, If Your Mother Only Knew is about coming of age in the days of Elvis & Teddy boys. The third will be about his time in the fire service. Concurrently penning

a fictional novel based on the art world (Bill owned 4 art galleries after retiring from the fire service), he’s got the writers bug good and proper! Bill said, ‘There’s been fan mail from all over the world. One lady was so thankful for reminding her what a wonderfully simple childhood she had’.

Often asked what the greatest change he’s

Billy Brown Telling us how it isWhen I met Hartfield resident, Bill Brown, at the East Grinstead Arts Festival last summer, 2 minutes of chatting to him was enough to decide to buy his book, Billy Brown, I’ll Tell Your Mother. I decided to read a couple of chapters to see if it was any good and not bother to finish if it became a chore. A week later it was done and dusted – no mean feat for a mother of 3 young children.

Often real life childhood stories are strewn with tragedy (the writer being the unwilling victim) yet this was no sob story. It was an uplifting, treasured and honest account of a young boy living in post-war London. With mawkish, gushing & tearful entertainment seemingly the mantra of the moment, Billy Brown was refreshingly sincere and true to life. Not all rosy but full of fun, best summed up as the opposite of a depressing read. Gaining popularity through grass roots, even when I mentioned it to the bookshop owner in Salcombe, Devon she had something good to say.

I knew that when it came to interview Bill I was going to hear some gems of wisdom that would be perfect for this month of resolutions – January.

seen through his life, he admits some changes are good and some are bad:

‘It’s difficult to simplify but I will say the worst thing that’s happened to society is the drugs... by far…The biggest change is respect. Respect for elders, for your parents, for the police, respect for other people’s property. When I was a little boy (as you know from the book) I was a terror, a rascal. But if my local policeman told me to get on home I would go, because if I didn’t he would have told my father... he lived in our flats! You did as you were told.

‘I might sound like an old grump but you’ve seen all these things. If only we had old values back, it would make such a difference’.

Talking about his time in the fire service it becomes obvious that whatever Bill does, he does it well. As a fireman he became the most highly qualified man in the service, admittedly taking even obscure courses so he could never be in the position of being told, ‘oh you can’t do so and so, it shouldn’t be done that way… etc.’ Thus another gem of wisdom spilt out: ‘if you’re going to do something... then do it to the best of your ability’ and ‘I’ll only do something if I know I can do it well’.

Such things are easy enough to say but Bill puts his money where his mouth is. He started at Battersea Firestation, moved to busier Brixton (his home turf), and finally got to, at the time, the busiest fire station in the world: North Kensington. ‘Because you’re either going to be a fireman

or you’re not…’ Bill states. ‘In all professions there are some who want to do the profession and some who come along for the ride’.

He served 21 years in the fire service; for the last 15 he was in charge of a specialised rescue unit who don’t fight fires but rescue people in machinery, cranes & even firemen who get into trouble. ‘You have to volunteer to do it (you can’t be forced) and it’s serious. By the end of I was getting a bit saturated, it’s like being at war... dealing with death and destruction every day. But I loved that job’.

He pulls out a book that his partner Jane came across called: “Great Fires of London” It’s literally strewn with pictures of Bill back in the day.

Among his awards he received the Chief Officer’s commendation for bravery for what Bill thought was an uncanny reason: A drunk was throwing tiles at the police from a roof, he’d slipped down and was hanging from the guttering, if he’d let go that would have been it. Bill dragged him up, still kicking and lashing out, tied thick rope around him, slung him over his shoulder and got him down to safety. When he was untied, the drunk legged it, the police in chase. They were impressed by Bill’s non-chalant fearlessness and recommended the award.

As a retired fireman I asked him about his thoughts on Health & Safety: ’Health and Safety is a good thing but it’s been overdone’. He goes on to explain how he came out of his local supermarket, there was a commotion in

the car park. An elderly lady had lost control of her car, it had turned sideways on her as she was getting out. The door was jammed against the lamppost and crushed her ankle. She was trapped and couldn’t move. Bill told the supermarket people that if they just lifted the back of the car and pulled it away from the lamppost she would be freed and they could get her out. But ‘oh no’ said they, Health and Safety regulations. Luckily an off-duty fireman showed up and he and Bill moved the car and got her out. ‘What many people don’t realise is that old people can go into shock, that can be the killer, not the injury itself. So you have to move fast’.

In an age of ‘cover-your-backside’ this is a refreshingly different attitude.

Here’s another gem: ‘You learn as you get older (it’s very rare that a young person will learn it) just how precious life is. Life is so precious. Some young people throw it away

by taking drugs. No matter what your status is in life, you can enjoy it. Even when you get up in the morning, watch the sunrise… it costs you nothing. To look at a sunrise or sunset it’s free. Jane (his partner) grew up in Hastings. Whenever we go to a coastal place she pauses for a moment just to smell the sea… and it’s free…. A walk on the Ashdown Forest, it’s free’.

He continued: ‘I mean children are going to become zombies… If they’re not looking at the

TV they’re looking at another screen. Get away from the bloody television… There’s a report in London that there’s an increase of cases of Ricketts (caused by sun deprivation), they’re stuck in doors all day… Why don’t they go out and play…

‘Don’t I sound like an old grump!’

Well I’m not that old yet (I hope) and it sounds like grounded sense to me.

I realised the biggest impression Bill made is that when you talk to him, it’s just simply him. He hasn’t attached shades of others personalities onto himself. This is rarer than people might think. I left the interview with a spring in my step and an upbeat feeling, looking forward to the next book…

So Happy Resolution forming!

Readers can meet Bill Brown in person when he does his next book signing at Waterstones in Crawley (date to be confirmed). Billy Brown, I’ll Tell Your Mother is available in all good bookshops & Amazon.

Could you become a buddy to a child or young person who has suffered the death of someone close to them?

Jigsaw4u is a local charity with offices in East Grinstead. We rely heavily on the support of our volunteers, without them we would be unable to provide a service to the families. You would be offered training and ongoing support and work together with trained staff.

Our service provides much needed support for local children, young people and their families who have experienced the death of a significant family member.

We offer a 6 week support group, including a Saturday and within these groups families are encouraged to share their feelings and emotions and learn how to develop coping strategies to support their emotional needs.

On-going or 1:1 support for individuals is also offered when necessary as well as advice and support for schools and other professionals.

A parent who attended our groups with her 7 year old son wrote the following testimony:

‘Jigsaw4u was a life saver for us – it equipped us with the tools we required to cope with our grief and taught us to communicate again. Before we felt alone and scared with Jigsaw4u we found ways to work through our grief together. We found peace, comfort and skills to help us cope with our grief’

Qualities we are looking for in a buddy are:

• excellent listening skills and the ability to empathise

• ability to communicate and interact with children

• have experienced a loss or bereavement

• to work as part of a team supporting bereaved families

Pretty Permanent Make-Up

Here is a recent customer testimonial:

“Mary-Anne thank you so much for my new look. The difference to how I look now, compared to before is

incredible. I was never very good at eyeliner and would always remove it disheartened. Having my eyes, eyebrows and lips done has given me so much more confidence in

how I look, I should have had it done years ago.” Anne P. Oct 2011

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME

“Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the

rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex

Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios.

People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.
