Experiments can be messy. I started one on a whim and it went to a place I did not expect. The results taught me something about everybody.
Anyone on Facebook has noticed the avalanche of political posts, cartoons, quotes, and video clips supporting or trashing various candidates. I knew that many posts were offensive to me so therefore if I posted similar content, I would be offending others. For something called “social” media, knowingly posting offensive material doesn’t sound very social.
But the awful posts kept coming and getting worse so I decided to experiment. What if I comment on these posts with a contrarian opinion? Would I get into

an online debate? Would the person apologize for their offensive post? Would they quietly unfriend me? Would the debates get down-right hostile?
I can now report that all of the above happened and I think I know why. More on that in a minute.
First dear readers, you must know that I’m a political junkie - I consume tons of information from a wide variety of sources. Few people can stump me in a debate on political matters, but of course others feel the same way. If I am to write for this column and make claims - my reputation is on the line so I back up any assertionss with solid research (which is biased by the media I choose to trust, but let’s allow that point to slide for today).
Which leads me back to Facebook. Most people just don’t have the facts when they post - or don’t have an appreciation for history or context. One friend proudly proclaimed that she overcame adversity on her own - she made it and others can too. What she failed to see was that she went to a state university, received federally-backed student loans for law school, then was hired by the U.S. government and so was her husband. One friend noticed this blatant hypocrisy but the rest just chimed-in with “You go girl” and “Yeah, Obama didn’t help you!”

would go. The extent and vitriol of these debates was not the lesson. The source of the background information and the style in which it was debated was the lesson.
To be specific and right to the point, the Bill O’Reilly (of Fox News) and Rush Limbaugh followers seem to have adopted the combative style and their quiver of debate zingers. I didn’t have time to poll all my Facebook friends on this whole line of reasoning but I feel confident in my conclusion.
In the by-gone era of three nightly television network news broadcasts (and no Internet), the bulk of the country was getting a considerably more moderate version of the news compared to today. Now, every American can review and select
the person who gives them the news exactly as one wants it. Liberal and African-American; Al Sharpton is on nightly. Conservative, white, male, over 50 - Sean Hannity might be your guy. Pot-smoking, atheist, liberal, smart-ass: Bill Maher is a safe bet. Rachel Maddow, Morning Joe, Anderson Cooper . . . the list is very long these days. And with DVRs, everybody can record “their news” to be watched at convenient times.
Is my point too simplistic? Perhaps, but I’ve felt the intensity of regular “friends” as they parrot these TV news personalities and I see in myself some of the traits of my favorite, Jon Stewart. Having favorite musicians and food is one thing, but if I were trying to lead a country with such
huge influencers having such visceral effects on the population causes me to pause. I’ve in fact started spending more time seeking different opinions from other new sources. I suggest others may wish to do the same thing.
P.S. It was recently announced that THE biggest debate of the political season will be held on Oct. 6th - Bill O’Reilly vs. Jon Stewart. Seriously, the candidate debates are likely to be well rehearsed and predictable. Bill and Jon have no such considerations - they are free to speak the truth as they see it. Of course the next day, all my Facebook friends will say Bill won. Or Jon. Depending on who they liked before the debate.

document the abundance and rapid spread of lionfish throughout the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.In 2010 researchers
estimated there were 89,000 lionfish in the Keys, in 2011 those estimates increased six-fold to 335,000 fish, which is likely a conservative estimate since lionfish hide in the reef. Lionfish have been present in low numbers along the east coast of Florida since the 1980’s, but were not reported in the Florida Keys until 2009. According to researchers, the average size of lionfish also increased. Scientists expected lionfish to eventually appear and increase in abundance in the Keys, but the rate of increase is both
surprising and alarming.“Lionfish are voracious
predators and are most likely having impacts on native fish species, disrupting the ecology of the area they invade,” said Ben Ruttenberg, fishery biologist with NOAA Fisheries. “Lionfish have no natural predators in their invaded range in theCaribbean and Atlantic.
With long-term monitoring, we will be able to document and understand the ecosystem impacts of this invasive predator.”Scientists continue to

Captain John Miller was not surprised by the visit. “He’s looking for a place to rest,” he explained to the visiting couple. Not long after
that, Goldstein saw some action on her line. Using live bait to fish for largemouth bass, she saw her bait start to move around. A minute later, something jumped over her

bobber. “It looked like a snake – but I’ve never heard of one jumping out of the water that way. No one else saw it, so I thought I must have been mistaken.” A few minutes later,
after a tug on her line, Goldstein reeled it in, thinking she needed to get new bait. What she saw shocked all of them. Her bait was almost gone, but the animal she’d hooked wasn’t the largemouth she was looking for. It was the same snake that they’d seen earlier. “I’ve never seen anything
like it. Not in all of my years of fishing or guiding,” said Captain Miller. “She caught a snake. With a rod and reel.” Captain Miller thought the snake might have been one of the dangerous ones, so instead of attempting to handle it, he cut the line as close to the hook as he could. The snake swam away with the fish held
firmly in his mouth.Ms. Goldstein contacted
a snake expert when they got back home. Edward Mercer is a licensed python hunter and spends a lot of time walking in the Everglades. Snake identification is a necessary safety skill for him. When shown the picture of the snake on the hook, he was able to identify it as a green water snake. “This snake is considered to be one of the more aggressive in Florida, but it isn’t venomous,” said Mercer. “It’s interesting to me that he went after the boat and the bait. The snakes are becoming habituated to humans like so many other animals have.” Mr. Mercer suspects that the snake was attracted to the boat not for shade, but for any bait that anglers might discard. “The snake now associates humans with food, to his detriment.” Ms. Goldstein agreed. “If
we had known he wasn’t
dangerous, we would have tried to get the hook out for him. It was certainly an exciting day on the water.” A green water snake came
to visit anglers while they were bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee. Aggressive and curious, he returned to the boat several times before swimming off towards the grass.The green water snake
found more than he was looking for in the grass – that’s where the visiting couple had cast their line looking for largemouth bass. Nicole Goldstein, who landed the snake, had just asked Captain John Miller what water snakes ate before she reeled it in. Aware that some of the
snakes on Okeechobee are potentially deadly, Captain Miller cut the line and let the snake go. The snake took off quickly, with the bait he had caught firmly in his mouth. He swam away sideways so the fish in his mouth wouldn’t slow him down.

What a great new addition to the Las Olas scene, a pub without pretenses, or looking to be another trendy singles bar. Having said that, it is a great place to meet people, but not in what has become the standard singles scene setting. Patrons appear to be professionals in the 35+ age range, looking for a decent drink, good company, and a great food experience. What a breath of fresh air from the show it all off scene.Do not expect typical
pub food fare here—according to Chef Stanton his mission is to create a “foie gras culinary experience that you can enjoy in flip flops.” The menu now mostly features chef Stanton’s New Orleans style inspirations. The menu offers a wide

selection of non-traditional pub-grub and many pork selections (the place is called The Royal Pig.) Some of the pork stars
are double cut pork chops, a non-traditional BLT served with pork bellies and smoked tomato, pork belly mac and cheese and candied bacon on the salads. “We use a lot of pork.” says Stanton. The ambiance in The
Royal Pig Pub is loud and festive and the whole place resembles a London train station. In fact, if Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts had a pub on campus, it might look like the Royal Pig. There are TVs everywhere you look including in the booths but it’s the bar spanning the entire length of the space that is focal point.
When you go, try the handcrafted chicken nachos appetizer. Be careful, that green decoration on top is a jalapeño. The New Orleans BBQ shrimp is apparently already a menu favorite. The organic cedar plank salmon, with home made pirogi (Polish version of ravioli) was cooked to perfection. Even if you aren’t a salmon lover, this dish could make you a convert. My favorite dish of the night was the grouper and mussel etouffee—I am still drooling over this one Fresh grouper lightly grilled, topped with baby organic vegetables, mussel etouffee and mango picalilly. For dessert we shared the
warm raison carrot cake with cream cheese icing

and caramel and coconut slivers—a truly decadent concoction. Then for the finale add the almond lace basket—raspberry gelato, crushed almond and organic berries, topped with vanilla ice cream.And before I forget, let’s
talk about drinks. After all this is a pub. They have a huge selection of beers, but the house signature martini is the Dark Angel, a delectable cocktail featuring Godiva Chocolate and your choice of premium vodka.

it’s important for your health and productivity to maintain a positive
attitude. Self-help author and life coach, Peter Baksa, shares some tips on how to remain positive in any work situation:
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR WORDSIf you keep track of your words every day, you will see a broad scale pattern which is either positive or negative. What is within is without. If your outlook toward people, situations, your job, money, abundance, love, among other things is positive, then you will keep bumping into just the right opportunities and the right people who help you on the way. In contrast, if all your reflexes and speech have a negative theme, well, it comes across in your external life events, too. Rather than using limiting words, like “cannot”, “have to”, and “got to”,

use more empowering words like, “I choose to”.
VISUALIZEIf you are after manifesting a hike in your salary, just visualize, consistently, how your life has changed after you’ve had a hike. Now, I know you are yet to have a raise but that does not matter. You must focus on the details as to what you would do with the hike in pay, even if it is yet to be realized in the 3D: would you save the extra bit in a savings account? Then picture yourself doing exactly that. Would you rather take your family on a trip? Think about the details of how you are traveling, the accommodation and the place.

Dealing with breast cancer (three times over 20 years) gave me the answer to why my life has been filled with so much love, peace, gratitude, and appreciation during this short time I have been around. Because of breast cancer, I have made a commitment to
help other women who are on the same path. By sharing my story, I hope to touch someone and give them the will drive and determination to fight this disease. Breast cancer continues to be the shadow in my life, but I am in charge of the journey.

Young Professionals for Covenant House, or YPFCH as many of you may know it, is celebrating its 20 year Anniversary this year. Throughout the years, an estimated 20,000 individuals have been members of YPFCH at some point making it a significant force on the social scene.YPFCH is an auxiliary
group that supports the efforts of Covenant House Florida, an organization that operates a shelter located off A1A in Fort Lauderdale that serves homeless, at-risk and runaway youth under the age of 21 including moms and their babies. CHF provides emergency shelter, food, health services, substance abuse treatment, GED programs, job readiness training, counseling, family reunification and transitional living. CHF has been in Fort Lauderdale for over 26 years and has served over 34,000 youth. Covenant House is an international organization with over 18 locations in metropolitan areas across the US, Canada
and Central America.In 1991, a group of
charitable young people came together to form the YPFCH as a fundraising auxiliary dedicated to raising money and awareness for Covenant House Florida. These young professionals raised much needed funds through group trips, socials and networking events. By 1996, YPFCH was having monthly events and socials in both Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Many long lasting friendships, even marriages, have developed over the span of 20 years. The group, though they started small, grew into a membership of thousands of young professionals. One signature event that
has lasted the test of time is Cranberry Jam. In its 19th year, Cranberry Jam takes place the Wednesday Eve before Thanksgiving. For 7 years the event was held in an empty cruise terminal in Port Everglades accommodating over 2,000 young professionals at this annual event. When the Port was no longer available, the event moved to such places as
downtown Fort Lauderdale and the World Famous Parrot Lounge. This year Cranberry Jam will take place at Bimini Boatyard.The Young Pro’s trips
have always been a hot topic of conversation. In addition to monthly socials in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, they put together many trips throughout the years. The widely popular and nationally famous Lost Weekend in Islamorada was a great escape. The group would enjoy a weekend getaway of fun, sun and camaraderie leaving lifelong lasting memories. One of the most sought
over vacations was the annual ski trip. YPFCH planned adventures to such places as Austria, Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy and the U.S. In fact, Scott Smiley planned a special event to take place on one of the YPFCH ski trips. “My wife (fiancée at the time) and I were planning on attending one of YPFCH’s ski trips to Italy. Suddenly it hit us, ‘how could there ever be a better way to have both a destination wedding AND European ski trip with almost 60

of our friends attend?’ For us, YPFCH will always hold a special place in our hearts.” Smiley said.Another big draw for
the young professionals was the annual cruise. Members would enjoy 3-4 nights cruising the Caribbean with hundreds of new and old friends. Activities would be planned for cruisers to unite on and off the ship. These trips and events
were a big part of the success of YPFCH. Over the 20 years that this group has been together they have not only raised over $1.7 million for Covenant House Florida but have united many people. So many friendships, marriages, babies and careers have been a part of this cohesive group. “I attended my first YPFCH event in 1996. As I have come to find out, many of the friends I have today were also at that
same event. I am proud to have experienced the majority of YPFCH’s 20 years.” Smiley said.
YPFCH has created many new events that benefit Covenant House Florida. They have the 5K on A1A in its 4th year, the Hard Rock Pub Crawl and they are one of 6 charities that benefit from the Fort Lauderdale Bus Loop. One very special partnership that has been a big part of what YPFCH does is Kid’s Fun Night. Each month, the volunteers from YPFCH host an arts and crafts or game night for the youth at the Covenant House Florida shelter.

The US embargo created a life in a bubble where remnants of the 1950’s pervades existence. Living with just the modicum of convenience is not easy and escaping is fraught with peril. In Lucy Mulloy’s debut feature, the frustrations, fears and dreams are vividly realized immersing the audience in the intoxicating/suffocating environs of Havana. Her young cast performs brilliantly and the production elements are stunning. Raul and Elio, both in their teens,
have first-hand knowledge of life only on Cuba, but daily they see tourists who are carefree, enjoying the beauty of the island. This dichotomy creates driven resolve for the boys to flee. Their efforts muddle along without a true time-table until a violent act necessitates their immediate call to action. Elio’s situation differs from Raul’s in not having any pangs of remorse...but Raul is extremely close to his sister, Lila and grapples with guilt in leaving her. “London Calling” was the invitation for the youth of the world to gather for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.....even if that line from The Clash’s 1979 punk rock anthem was more about a rebel yell than athletic excellence.The XXXth Olympiad was seen by a
couple billion TV viewers, and EAST was there. The fastest humans on the planet...Bolt on the track and Phelps in the pool...led the way to gold glory. Team USA won the medal count, while British hosts pulled off spectacular opening and closing ceremonies.“Brilliant” was the overdone adjective
as London-town carried on in bloody lush style, with the local color as interesting as the view from the NBC cameras.Flags, scarves, hats, team jerseys, and body paint
demonstrated national pride as sport fans paraded thru the city exploring the west end theater district in Covent Garden, world class museums, government buildings hundreds of years old, and venues with pop-up art, free concerts, and street circus performers.Vodka flowed at the Sochi, Russia, exhibit...home of the
February, 2014 Winter Olympics...where the international jet set and nouveau riche were well represented. The Brazilians, as usual, seemed to earn the gold medal for partying. Rio’s energy came on strong in London as they promoted their 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Add the 2014 World Cup for football/soccer, and you can count on our neighbors to the south to gear up for world class celebrations.London got great reviews for infrastructure, pageantry,
and athletic performances. Let’s hope the nations in attendance took home some of that peace and good will.
The English pubs (think 200-300 year old sports bars) provided perfect gathering spots for Olympics TV viewing, national storytelling, and beer. The pub grub has improved, and it seemed there were happy hour deals for the entire fortnight.
