WHAT IS EBOLA VIRUS

A virus which causes hemorrhagic feversLive in animal hostsHumans can contract the viruses from infected animals.

BACKGROUND

The virus was named after the Ebola river in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it

was first discovered.It was first discovered in 1976.

TYPES OF EBOLA Ebola Zaire Ebola Sudan Ebola Ivory Coast Ebola Bundibugyp Ebola Reston

The first four are found in Africa except Ebola Reston found in the Philippines

which affects animal only.

CAUSESFound in :-

African monkeys.Chimps.Fruit bats.Pigs.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION

Transmission from animals to humans

Waste products (By Contact)Blood (By Eating Flesh)

Transmission from person to person

Symptoms of EBOLA

Redness in the eyes. Swelling of the genitals.Internal and external bleeding.Bleeding rash over the entire body.

How is Ebola Fever TreatedThere is no cure for Ebola fever.

Oxygen therapy Intravenous fluids Blood transfusions Medications to treat shock Pain medications

Tests and diagnosis

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

No antiviral medications have proved effective

Supportive hospital care includes: Providing fluids Maintaining blood pressure Providing oxygen as needed Replacing lost blood Treating other infections that develop
