DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options

Tonight’s information is subject to change

College Credit Plus Recommendations have been released by the Ohio Board of Regents

These recommendations are under consideration by the state Legislature

We are describing the PSEO program as it exists today.

What is PSEO?

Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is an opportunity for qualified high school students to take college classes before graduation

There are two options: Option A – the student receives college credit and the

family pays all costs Option B – the student receives both high school and

college credit, and the school district pays tuition and books

Why Would I do Option A?

Option A is the only option available during the summer

Option A students may not want to have college classes on the high school transcript

What Does Option B Cover?

Option B students will have costs paid by the school district. This includes: Tuition Books (student may be required to return at the end

of the term) Fees

Option B does not include: Optional Fees (parking, gym membership) Transportation

What are the benefits of PSEO?

Free college creditOpportunity to enroll in classes not available

at high schoolExposure to college faculty/ college

expectationsCollege credit may transfer easily (especially

between public institutions within Ohio)

What Are the Risks of PSEO?

College coursework is more rigorous than high school Pace is much faster – students will cover the same

content as a year-long AP class in a 15 week semester College Faculty expect more work to be done outside

of the classroomFinancial Risk

PSEOP legislation states the school districts may require families to re-pay the cost of tuition and books for students who fail or withdraw

What Are the Risks of PSEO?

Participation in college classes may take time away from other activities Student may need to limit involvement in sports and

other extra-curricular activities or jobsTransportation is not provided

Students taking classes on a college campus need to factor in time needed to drive to campus, find parking, etc.

Course credit may not transfer to private or out-of-state colleges

Who can participate in PSEO?

Students must be in grades 9 – 12Students must have an open period in the

school day (not counting lunch) 1 HS Carnegie Unit (year long course) = 5 semester

hours A student with one open period may take 5 semester

hours during the entire school year

Students must file letter of intent with HS counselor by March 30

Students must meet the admission criteria set by the college
