1. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the old man’s eye is an important visual image. Poe shows us the eye in such a way that few readers can forget it. Turn back to pages 52 and 55. What are some of the words Poe uses to effectively create the image?

2. Turn back to the first description of the old man’s heartbeat (page 55). How does Poe force the reader to hear it almost “for real”?

3. Two images were considered in questions 1 and 2, above. One was something seen, the other something heard. What is another visual image in the story? What is another image that appeals to the ear?

4. Some people would rather read a good story than see the same story on TV. What does this suggest about these readers’ powers of imagery?
