COMENIUS PROGRAM Turkey / Salihli Italy / Giulianova

Warm welcome to all the Comenius partners and exchanging presents at the

conference room.

The Mayor of the city welcomed us in his office. He gave some information about

Salihli Municipality.

PLANETARIUM

GEOTHERMAL ENERGYWe visited the geothermal energy center in Kursunlu, 6 km outside Salihli.

Most houses in Salihli use this energy to heat their houses.

There are 8 geothermal wells. 180 lt/sec hot water is pumped to the city center. All the water is cycled and heated again.

About 13,000 buildings make use of geothermal energy and the municipality is planning to increase this number up to 20,000 residences.

EPHESUS

Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the coast of Ionia, three kilometers southwest of present-day Selçuk in Izmir province, Turkey. It was built in the 10th century.  According to estimates Ephesus had a population of 33,600 to 56,000 people in the Roman period, making it the third largest city of Roman Asia Minor after Sardis and Alexandria Troas.

The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Library of Celcius Celsus is used as a library and a mausoleum. There were four woman sculptures in front of the building. They are called as mind, destiny, virtue and science.

Ephesus was one of the seven churches of Asia that are cited in the Book of Revelation.  The Gospel of John may have been written here. The city was the site of several 5th-century Christian Councils.

It is also the site of a large gladiators’ graveyard.

SARDES

Sardes was the capital of the Lydian Empire.

The synagogue was a section of a large bath-gymnasium complex, that was in use for about 450 – 500 years. In the beginning, middle of the 2nd century AD, the rooms the synagogue is situated in were used as changing rooms or resting rooms.

Sardes has involved the first relics of theatre and archeologists are trying to emerge into light those relics.

According to the known history, first Golden Money was coined in Sardes. Sardes is famed in history as the place where modern currency was invented.

FAMOUS MESIR FESTIVAL

The StoryWhen Hafsa Sultan was ill, his son

called for doctors of his time to find a cure. They made a special paste and when Hafsa Sultan ate from it she soon got well. Solomon the Magnificent ordered them to make the paste in large amounts and give away to his people. Since then, every year Mesir Paste, prepared with 41 types of spices, is distributed to people from the Sultan Mosque on Mesir Festival.

MEVLEVIHANE: THE HOUSE OF WHIRLING DERVISHES

The Dervishes lived in that house a humble life reciting the Holy Quran and meditating Allah.

The Mevlevi life is based on “adab and erkan” (discipline and rules of conduct)

In their conduct, they are very kind, graceful, and discreet

Every part of the Mevlevi system of behavior bears a symbolical meaning, and this can be observed in the act of the whirling dervishes in ‘Sema’ rituals.
