school staff for response. School resource
officers (SRO’s) in schools are trained for emergencies and staff know to contact
law enforcement anytime there is a per-ceived threat to safety and security.
Schools across the district are closed campuses, meaning exterior access doors
are locked and admittance controlled. Violations should be reported to school
staff. Lobby area technology provides screening
for all visitors, with alerts to staff provid-ed when persons who should not be on campus attempt to be admitted.
Counseling and support services are always available. Parents can contact
school staff if they notice disturbing changes in behavior or think their chil-
dren may need mental/emotional support for any reason.
Additional protocols and procedures are in place at every school and CMS facility
but are not disclosed in order to preserve safety and security.
As always, if you
have any questions or concerns please
feel free to call me at 980-343-6480 or
email me at Orlando.robinson@cms.k12.nc.us.
February was a very busy month at “The
Creek”. I would like to thank all parents, teachers, staff, scholars, volunteers, and
community members that participated in our 6th Annual International Festival. The
international festival was a success! We had over 225 families attend and more
than 45 volunteers give their time from CPCC, UNCC and Rocky River High
School JROTC. Our superintendent, Dr. Wilcox, said our festival was awesome!
We owe a big thank you to our teachers for their time and effort on the displays. Our scholars' work shined brightly
throughout the hallways and the class-rooms. The teachers’ hard work and
dedication to our school is evident! Our second and third grade scholars did an
outstanding job singing and performing their choreographed routines. It was
amazing! I want to also thank all of you that supported our Book Fair.
As we move towards spring break our scholars are engrossed in their academics.
We are intensifying focus on preparing our 3rd-5th grade scholars for their
upcoming EOG’s & our Pre-K-2nd grade scholars for their final assessments. But
we can’t do this without the support of the parents. Please continue to encourage
your child to do their best, check over their homework and make sure they are
reading nightly. Also, please make sure
your child attends school every day and is
on time.
On a heavier note I want to address the
increase in school violence and our con-tinual commitment to make Reedy Creek safe for our staff, scholars, and parents.
Safety and security for scholars and staff are top priorities at CMS. Please see
below some critical actions we have in place:
All schools are required to create and update a safety plan to be activated in the
event of an emergency. While staff are trained to implement this plan, specific
details in these plans are kept confidential to ensure maximum security effectiveness.
At least twice a year, all schools conduct lock-drown drills during which students
and staff practice emergency procedures to block access to rooms. These lock-
down procedures are evaluated for im-provements after each drill.
If you see something, say something - any person on any campus should immediately
report concerns or possible threats to

Spring is a very busy time
for us in Kindergarten! We will study
about forces of motion, work with position
words, compose and decompose
numbers 11- 19. We are also learning how to really be “super” readers by
being able to see more than the text on the page and be able to use what we’ve learned to answer questions with lots of
details.
Please continue to work on applying
our knowledge of blending letter sounds when trying to figure out a tricky word when reading and writing.
In order to meet the Kindergarten standards that are in place, it is also very important that your child knows
how to read and write their sight words. Please refer to the Big Goal 100 Sight Words list. Also, be on the lookout for our writing
homework to start this month. Thank you for your continued support!
First grade scholars con-
tinue to work hard and are blossoming
academically and socially. There is still a
lot of learning and working to
do; please continue to work with your scholar daily.
Our Reader’s Workshop lessons are
teaching scholars how to look at pic-
tures and text to determine how a
character’s actions, thoughts, and feel-
ings together can help determine a
character’s personality. We are also
working on comparing characters from
two different texts.
In mathematics, scholars are learning
how to determine whether addition and
subtraction equations are true or false,
and finding the missing number in addi-
tion and subtraction equations. They
are also learning different ways to group
numbers to solve problems with three
addends. Our first graders are
climbing towards success, thank
you for your continued support!

Third Grade (2028)
strategies including rounding. We will also revisit addition and subtraction
strategies. Students will fluently add and subtract numbers within 1,000.
Please continue to make sure that your child is reading each night and completing his or her reading log as well as studying
math facts.
Thank you for purchasing the EOG prep book for $20. Your child’s
teacher is still accepting payments.
In literacy we are moving into our unit
on Mysteries. Students will practice
reading like detectives by looking for clues, getting to know the characters and potential sus-pects, being aware of motives and alibis
and trying to piece everything together to solve the problem in the story. In math we are finishing up fractions and
moving into our next unit. We will revisit area and perimeter briefly. Then, stu-dents will Solve two-step word problems
using the four operations, represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity,
and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation
Happy March! We are so
LUCKY to have such hardwork-
ing scholars!
In Reader’s Workshop, we are
learning all about fairytales and their
story elements. In writing, we are
authoring and publishing our own
fairytales! In math, we are continu-
ing to work on various strategies to
solve story problems with regroup-
ing and multiple steps. In social stud-
ies, we are wrapping up our unit on
culture. We hope you enjoyed our
Thailand, Egypt, and India displays at
the International Festival!
Please continue working with your
child at home to strengthen con-
cepts learned here at school. Re-
view work sent home in the Friday
Folder each week. Enjoy reading
with your child for 20-30 minutes
each night. It is important that both
fiction and nonfiction books are
read. Please monitor that your child
accurately answers oral comprehen-
sion questions as well as written
response questions by referring
back to the text to prove answers.
Practice telling time to the hour, half
hour, and quarter hour with your
second grader, as well as counting
collections of coins up to 1 dollar.
Don’t forget to sign your child’s
agenda nightly.
Thank you for your continued
support!

ments.
In March, we will be beginning with measurement of liquids, weight, time
and length. Be sure and let your child help measure at home in real world situations. There is nothing like practical
experience to help us learn. We will wrap up the month with our hands-on Geometry unit. This unit includes: lines, ray, angles, identifying quadrilaterals and
triangles and identifying parallel and perpendicular lines in 2-D shapes.
There will be many new vocabulary
words, so it is important that your child study these words at home. This is our final unit before we begin reviewing for
our EOG in May! After finishing our Non Fiction Writing
unit, we will be now heading back into Social Studies. Our Unit will be about the early settlers of North Carolina.
We will begin with the Native Ameri-cans of North Carolina and move into the early European Explorers and colo-nists. In Literacy, we will continue our
spiral review of standards and strategies to help our 4th grade readers prepare for the EOG test. We will also begin
our Historical Fiction unit where stu-dents will understand the importance of
Setting and the role it plays in a text.

In reading students are completing the research projects and
will begin writing informative/explanatory texts in order to convey an idea or information clearly. We will
also embed the craft and structure of poetry in this unit.
In math students will be working on volume and converting US and metric units of measurement. We will also be
focusing on reviewing and reteaching
previously learned concepts. Continue work with fractions and decimals at
home. In Science we will be learning about the human body and body sys-
tems. Students will learn how the body systems work together to func-tion properly. They will also learn
healthy ways to keep the systems functioning properly.
Fifth Grade (2025)
School Counseling Department “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but
the triumph over it, the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear — Nelson Man-dela”. This month’s character trait is Courage, doing the
right thing even when it is not popular. A courageous student is one who believes in themselves. They believe they can achieve every goal set fourth for them. A coura-
geous student is resilient; they believe they can overcome any obstacle that may arise. The most important aspect of courage is the strength to be who you are and the strength to be different. Let’s make sure this month we are promoting the
importance of being courageous to our scholars. We want to continue to support our scholars in getting to school on time and ready to learn by 8:00 am each day.
Thank you parents for your commitment with getting your child to school each day and we are here to support in every way we can.
