Fort SumterApril, 1861

- S.C. fires on Fort Sumter -Jefferson Davis – Confederate-Abraham Lincoln – Union

South - first shot fired in Civil War

First Battle of Manassas(aka First Battle of Bull Run)July, 1861

- hot air balloons for surveillance- Jackson stops Union advance on Richmond, VA (confederate capital)

South - “Stonewall” Jackson gains nickname- weaponry improves- deaths increase- Realization: war will not end quickly

Battle of New OrleansApril 1862

- Union captures New Orleans-Union blockade

North - 2nd largest city in south- Southern supplies limited

- New technologies- unexpected death rate- “letters from the front”

AntietamSeptember, 1862

- Maryland – 1 day battle

North - Bloodiest day in US history-23,000 casualties in 1 day
