- S.C. fires on Fort Sumter -Jefferson Davis – Confederate-Abraham Lincoln – Union
South - first shot fired in Civil War
First Battle of Manassas(aka First Battle of Bull Run)July, 1861
- hot air balloons for surveillance- Jackson stops Union advance on Richmond, VA (confederate capital)
South - “Stonewall” Jackson gains nickname- weaponry improves- deaths increase- Realization: war will not end quickly
Battle of New OrleansApril 1862
- Union captures New Orleans-Union blockade
North - 2nd largest city in south- Southern supplies limited
- New technologies- unexpected death rate- “letters from the front”
AntietamSeptember, 1862
- Maryland – 1 day battle
North - Bloodiest day in US history-23,000 casualties in 1 day
- Antietam- War Medicine- Emancipation Proclamation- African Americans join the fight
Emancipation Proclamation: Jan 1, 1863 – Lincoln frees all slaves in Confederate states
VicksburgJuly, 1863
- TN- Completes North’s “Anaconda Plan” (snake)
North - TURNING POINT – - Miss. River captured – S loses supply chain- Conscription Act: 18-45 years, $300-$600 to hire others, or 20+ slaves don’t have to fight
GettysburgJuly, 1863
- PA- 3 Days long: 50,000 casualties total- most killed in one battle
North - Gettysburg Address – Lincoln dedicates the graveyard- Pickett’s Charge – 10,000 deaths in 1 hr (S)
General Sherman’s March to the SeaSummer, 1864
- Marches from Atlanta to Savannah- total war: burn and destroy everything
North - Burning of Atlanta & Columbia- total war destroyed south
- Sherman’s March to the Sea- Surrender at Appomattox
Bentonville, NCMarch, 1865
- last battle in NC during Civil war- Sherman (N) v Johnston (S)`
North - largest/most important battle in NC- ends fighting in NC
Bennett’s FarmhouseApril 1865
- Surrender in NC of Gen. Johnston (S) to Gen. Sherman (N)
North - NC devastated – death, debt, destruction- shortage of: food, cloth, medical supplies
Appomattox CourthouseApril, 1865
- South surrenders- Lee surrenders to Grant
North - gentleman’s surrender- south may take supplies and return home (food, horses & mules for plowing)
April 14th, 1865 - Lincoln is assassinated in Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth.
