IMPORTANT DATES
Without a doubt, the role I enjoy most as principal is my interactions
with students. I love visiting them in their classrooms, scheduling lunch
dates, the quick hug or high five in the hallway, working with them to
problem solve conflicts in my office and now serving at the sponsor of
the CSA Spirit Club. This year I am excited to announce that Mrs.
Winters, our Administrative Intern, will be co-leading this club with me.
This is the time of the year when the CSA
Spirit Club comes together and begins the
process of planning and implementing
school-wide Spirit Days and special
activities for the year. Student representatives from the Voyager and
Explorer classrooms are identified each year through a process that is
voluntary and uses a method of random selection. With the exception of
students who have served on the CSA Spirit Club in the previous year, all
Voyager and Explorer students are welcome to volunteer and participate
by “throwing their name in the hat” for random selection. Each classroom
has four representatives- two primary and two secondary.

The primary goal of the CSA Spirit Club is to plan and coordinate student
activities that reflect and support the mission and character values of
CSA, thereby building school spirit and unity throughout the school.
Some of the Spirit Club activities are:

Coordinating one to three school-wide activities that support local
charities;
Coordinating special school-wide activities that are fun and engaging
for all students and align with the school-wide theme for the year;
Coordinating a service project at CSA that enhances the school
campus and/or CSA community;
Coordinating the annual Penny Drive;
Supporting the annual CSA Beluga Ball and Staff Appreciation Week;

CSA Library Volunteers
Our wonderful CSA Library is run completely by our devoted parent and grandparent volunteers.
We are in need of volunteers for these shifts: Monday 12:00 - 3:30 PM, Tuesday 12:00 - 3:30 PM,
Wednesday 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM and Thursday 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM and 12:00 - 3:30 PM. If you are
interested in volunteering, please contact Debbie Thor at dthor@csaschool.org / 810-632-2200 ext. 104.
Students who serve as a representative on the CSA Spirit Club learn about leadership and all that it entails -
commitment, reliability, responsibility, collaboration and representation, organizational skills and oral
speaking skills. They learn more about how the mission, philosophies and character values of the school are
put into action every day, and their individual and collective part in making CSA the very best that it can be.
Students who serve as a representative in the Spirit Club also gain valuable experience and preparation for
participation in Student Government at the middle school and high school level.
The Spirit Club will make their debut at the CSA Pep Rally on Monday, October 26th where they will formally
introduce themselves to the Student Body. I am beyond excited to work with these highly enthusiastic and
spirited students!
Look for news about CSA Spirit Club activities in the upcoming issues of the Tuesday Times and the
Elementary Examiner.
Why do leaves change colors in the fall? A green leaf is green
because of a pigment called chlorophyll, which is found inside a
structure in the leaf called a chloroplast. Chloroplasts are abundant
during the growing season, so chlorophylls' green color dominates
and masks any other pigments that may be present in the leaf. This is
why the leaves of summer are characteristically green.
In late summer, as daylight hours shorten and temperatures cool, the veins that carry fluids into and out of
the leaf are gradually closed off as a layer of special cells forms at the base of each leaf. Water and mineral
intake into the leaf is reduced, slowly at first, and then more rapidly. It is during this time that the
chlorophyll begins to decrease and the hidden pigments of yellow (xanthophyll) and orange (beta-
carotene) are revealed .
The quality of the color show of the trees depends on weather, sunlight and
soil moisture. A growing season with ample moisture that is followed by a
rather dry, cool, sunny autumn that is marked by warm days and cool but
frostless nights provides the best weather conditions for development of the
brightest fall colors, according to the United States National Arboretum. Lack
of wind and rain in the autumn prolongs the display; wind or heavy rain may
cause the leaves to be lost before they develop their full color potential.
